american idol chatter

the judges like the
tiny girl from texas
with the janis joplin
rasp in her voice...
seconds before the
audition, she was
daydreaming about
the virgin teen boy
she deflowered the
weekend before in a
pre-owned metalic
blue ford focus

a cute black girl from
detroit with sass and brass
dares the judges to reject
her when she unleashes her
"proud mary" solo

craig, a gay waiter
from oregon with
guyliner, a wink
and a swagger, tears
the place up with
a voice that could
fill a stadium

the eyes of a
twenty-year-old
former gang leader
from chicago
moisten up when
they tell him
he's going to
hollywood, his
street smarts and a
voice as deep as
a well seal his fate

kelly's a bubbly blonde
with a perfect figure and
a degree from juilliard,
she wows them with her
superstar vocals, the
judges know she's not
blue collar but she's
still got true idol grit

the rotund cab driver
smiles a mile wide
when he warbles "smile,"
wins the judges' votes
with his boston accent
and subtle humor

christopher rizzo,
a handsome young
man from south philly
with a photogenic smile
and a gift of gab,
knocks 'em dead with
his "very country"
rendition of "proud
to be an american"...
you could almost
envision the gold
records glowing
in the darkness
of his future trophy room

the face of a
homeless dude from
milwaukee - whose folks
kicked him out last
christmas - lights up
like a broadway marquee
when they give him the
thumbs up for his "take"
on "light my fire"

shy sixteen-year-old
carla, unwed mother
of twin boys, dirt poor
from somewhere in
louisiana, sings "and
i am telling you i'm not
going" with such passion
that the judges give her
a standing ovation

maria, a pretty latina from
miami with a nose ring
and a shell necklace, even
adds a bluesy moan to her
solo turn on "what's love
got to do with it," they
love her candor,
her love of family,
and her sexy way
with a song

she drives home that
night and her mother
rejoices in her good
fortune..."mom," maria
proclaims, "i'm going
to be rich and famous,
the whole world will
embrace me, everyone
will know who i am"

"of course they will,"
her mother replies
remembering her own dreams
so many years ago, she hugs
maria and casts a hopeful glance
toward heaven
