What We Carry Home
An Anthology of Narrarive Poetry and Prose edited by David Fraser
For All Shipping Destinations $20.00
|
The cover of this anthology depicts the raven. The raven is, according to much of the mythology of the world, a protector, teacher, creator, trickster and bringer of great magic. Some believe he is the gods’ messenger in the mortal world. Others see him as a creature of paradox, a scavenger whose devious nature cannot be taken at face value. No other creature has evoked such strong emotion or crept so widely into the psyches of men and women. From the first story of our creation, the raven has been present to bring light into the darkness.
As writers and poets we are like ravens. We carry home our treasures and share them. What We Carry Home is a small offering of that sharing by sixty-two writers from Canada and further afield. We are all watchers and witnesses to the world and as writers we have a driven passion to observe, report, comment, and create art as a way of seeing, as a way of attaining voice.

Paper Boats
Poetry by David Fraser
For All Shipping Destinations $16.95
|
Tradition or legend has it that Li Bai folded some of his poems into paper boats and sent them floating down a river to the wider world, much as peach blossoms on entering a stream drift far from their source.
These ephemeral, transient paper boats are being set free upon the world. Like the Chinese and Japanese poets, they will wandered. They will let the water course take them randomly through the landscape to explore, meditate and contemplate the moment.
This collection is a culmination of daily practice in capturing small evanescent moments over the past five years. In the lines of verse you will find shades of Paul Nelson, Allen Ginsberg, Kenneth Rexroth, Tu Fu, Li Bai, Robert Hass, Basho, Buson, Issa, Fiona Robyn, Allen Watts, Patrick Lane, Lao Tsu, and Deng Ming-Dao.

Memory Shop and Other Stories
10 Stories for Young People and 10 Pieces of Art
For All Shipping Destinations $24.95
|
The Memory Shop and Other Stories features 10 writers and 10 stories along with 10 artists and their creations of a work of art for each of the stories. This is unique in that the artistic pieces are not illustrations but works of art in their own right.
This year marks one hundred years since the construction of Qualicum Beach’s old school; the building which has become The Old School House (TOSH) Arts Centre. So, it seems a fitting year to launch this book which combines stories for children and works of art by some of TOSH’s artists-in-residence. TOSH’s mission has always been to provide a venue for all forms of art, and art education for all ages; and to support local emerging artists. With the ongoing support of the town of Qualicum this inclusive philosophy has made TOSH an enduring and vibrant focal point for the arts community in Qualicum Beach.
The inspiration for this book came from a two-fold desire to unite the written word with the visual image and to support TOSH in a meaningful way.
Firstly the book gave the opportunity for local visual artists, and for writers of children’s stories to present their work. The quality of the stories, submitted through an on-line story contest, exceeded all expectations. At times humorous, touching, or quirky, they provided great inspiration for the works of art, and in turn, have been enriched by the artists’ interpretations. This anthology exposes children to contemporary art as the artists’ interpret the written word.
Secondly, this anthology will help support the good work of TOSH in an ongoing way, through the profits from its sale. Public funding for arts endeavours has been diminishing in recent years, yet artistic expression, individually or communally, is an invaluable facet of community life, and we hope TOSH can continue to serve in supporting that for at least another hundred years to come.

Small Corners
Poetry by Pat Smekal
For All Shipping Destinations $12.95
|
Pat Smekal spent some time going through letters, photograph albums and newspaper clippings, with a view to reducing clutter in drawers and cabinets, on shelves, and in an old steamer trunk . The clearing-out process took much longer than anticipated. Of course, the bulk of material was diminished, but by far the more important outcome was that Pat was reminded of people who had touched her life in significant ways, either personally or through their stories. It struck her that whether the connection came about through a familial relationship, a friendship, a brief but meaningful interaction, or even through reading a stranger’s story, these were people she would always remember.
The oldest albums on her storeroom shelf had little black corners to hold the photos in place. It’s as if important moments were captured and held, not to be forgotten, just as these people have been captured and imprisoned in her memory. She invites you to meet them, as you browse through her album of poetry.

Stones
Selected Stories and Poetry by the Easy Writers
For All Shipping Destinations $19.95
|
In the anthology Stones, nine Vancouver Island writers present works of prose and poetry. Each a pebble flicked into the pool of life’s emotions, these works send ripples through readers’ minds. Here is what two of BC’s leading writers have to say about the prose and poetry respectively:
The prose pieces in Stones take us on adventures from the West Coast of British Columbia to Islamabad and Korea. Comic or poignant, always inspiring, they show how people learn and grow through encounters involving fire, foreign territory, families and fortune cookies. Blurring the line between fiction and memoir, there is an unmistakable and enduring truth to each story.
- Carol Matthews, author of Questions for Ariadne: The Labyrinth and the End of Times (Outlaw Editions) and Incidental Music (Oolichan Books).
The poems in Stones are “grace-notes fallen from fiddle airs” and “distant falling things.” Their ripples linger. These writers celebrate the places, people, and events they have known, in the world and in their imaginations, through language so charged that “the skin painted thin on bones” prickles at the experiences recalled.
- Yvonne Blomer, author of The Book of Places (Black Moss Press) and a broken mirror, fallen leaf (Gerald Lampert Award finalist).

On Poetry
poetry and poetics by Naomi Beth Wakan and David Fraser
For All Shipping Destinations $19.95
|
The sheer volume of contradiction, whimsy, apprehension, pithiness, and diversity contained in this wonderful collection of words about poetry, by poets, proves, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that those of us who call ourselves poets frequently have no idea what we’re doing, or why we do it. All we know is that it must be done. Perhaps Carl Sandburg said it best: ‘I’ve written some poetry I don’t understand myself.’ "
David Bateman
“This little book is a kaleidoscope of ways of seeing, being, reflecting, deflecting, confessing, professing, processing, revealing the mystery at the heart of things. Open anywhere to lift the spirits.”
Patricia Ludwick, writer,
editor, and addicted reader

Signpost - A Pairie Town
Short Stories by Dan Lundine
Email: Dan Lundine Directly
|
Dan Lundine’s memoir, Signpost - A Prairie Town is set in and around a fictional community in Saskatchewan. Through the eyes of a rookie cop from B.C.’s west coast, we observe the little town of Signpost, and become acquainted with a delightful mix of local characters. Lundine’s earthy prose sweeps us along with the newcomer, as we come to understand small-town prairie life in the 60’s—its people, its challenges and its humour.
- Patricia Smekal
Hilarious, tender, unflinching, always honest—Dan Lundine is a natural storyteller whose keen eye recorded small town Saskatchewan and its characters all those many years ago when he was a just-sprung Mountie fresh from the west coast and raring for adventure.

Caught in My Throat
The fourth collection of poetry by David Fraser
For Canadian Shipping Destinations $19.95
For USA Shipping Destinations $22.95
For International Shipping Destinations Other Than USA $24.95
|
Caught in My Throat, David Fraser’s fourth collection of poetry, courageously reveals
versions of his truth. These poems are passionate narratives that are both evocative and entertaining,
as he weaves stories that have shaped his life and the lives of others. In a metaphorical sense his
truth is lodged in his throat and he is driven tell it.
As a witness, the poet is compelled to break the silence that inhabits memory. Caught
in My Throat is a testament to this poet’s evolutionary growth. Here is an exploration
of possibilities, a juggling of the truth, and a mining of the sediment of his life.

No Way Easy
The third collection of poetry by David Fraser
For Canadian Shipping Destinations $19.95
For USA Shipping Destinations $22.95
For International Shipping Destinations Other Than USA $24.95
|
No Way Easy, David Fraser’s third collection of poetry, is raw and candid in its responsive reflection on the universal
journey toward awareness. He begins with observations from a state of shock produced by the entrance into the unconsciousness
of the world. From there he moves through the chaos and trauma of growing up and delves into memory and epiphany in a life
of ordinary circumstance seen through extraordinary eyes. This is a journey we all must take, surviving the shock of
childhood and adolescence and becoming our own unique selves, free of the pain and suffering of the past.
These poems are narratives that will strike a chord and evoke in the reader, his or her own different but similar stories.
“A small dance shuffling in the hay
the way our tortured ankles glide
when in our hearts we hide the pain
for one more waltz again in straw.”

Running Down the Wind
The second collection of poetry by David Fraser
For Canadian Shipping Destinations $19.95
For USA Shipping Destinations $22.95
For International Shipping Destinations Other Than USA $24.95
|
In Running Down the Wind, David Fraser reflects on life as an observer of very personal events,
of metaphysical interpretations of the landscape around him, and of the social and political directions
of our voracious world. His poems engender raw emotion, express love and loss, delve into the author’s
psyche and display the anguish and the joy that characterizes life.
David’s poetry invites us into an intimate dance with Nature and makes us question our “spaces more
mechanically laid out.” Sitting round a campfire in Nootka Sound he sees the sun
“spilling blue fragments upon the night”; hiking The Wild Pacific Trail he observes
“the rainforest/snuggling up beside the foaming sea.” He bemoans his “fading words
laid down/that never reach a perfect state”, and yet David is able to capture in a
single image what many of us fail to notice in a lifetime!
- Cindy Shantz
“David Fraser’s poetry embues vivid imagery and great depth of feeling. He has the ability
to draw on inside experience so as to touch the very essence of life itself. The vocabulary
is very evocative for me as a painter and at the same time allows me to use my own imagination
at will. I love reading his poems.”
- Philippa Haidu
“David Fraser looks up, looks around him, takes in his surroundings, and reports on nature as a vital
restorative element in our lives.”

Going to the Well
A collection of poetry by David Fraser
For Canadian Shipping Destinations $17.95
For USA Shipping Destinations $20.95
For International Shipping Destinations Other Than USA $22.95
|
This publication is his first collection of poetry. Whether writing poetry or short fiction,
David examines characters struggling with time and entropy, with relationships and meaning
in lives often caught up and stagnant in their own existence, their aging and their
disenfrancisement. Many poems deal with the darkside of the human condition as a
political protest to man’s inhumanity to man, and to man’s blatant disregard
for our greatest resource, Mother Earth. However within this dark perspective
there is tenderness and hope and lyrical imagery of what life wonderfully can be.

The Dark Side of the Billboard
A collection of short fiction
by David Fraser
For Canadian Shipping Destinations $19.95
For USA Shipping Destinations $22.95
For International Shipping Destinations Other Than USA $24.95
|
The Dark Side of the Billboard is an eclectic collection of stories that span many genres from literary
to science fiction, magical realism and horror. These are haunting tales that
lurk in a bizarre world one step away from the veneer that coats over everyday
existence. Behind the brightly coloured billboard is another world, a world where
psychological and physical cruelty hovers, where a child’s love for his grandmother
turns bizarre, where fathers both surprise and disappoint their sons, where troubled characters
escape within their own imaginations. Settings vary from lush gardens, malls, and transcontinental
buses, to interior places of the mind. David Fraser tells these darkside stories in an intimate,
compassionate way through action, dialogue and lyrical imagery.

Ascent Aspirations
Anthology One
Ascent Aspirations Magazine
Fall 2005
SOLD OUT
|
In this first print edition of Ascent Aspirations Magazine we didn’t set a theme but simply asked our readers
and our on-line contributors to submit their best work. We were not looking for anything specific, but we were
looking for an eclectic mix of work that would reflect the efforts in poetry of the last eight years of successful
publishing on the web.
Forty-seven poets grace these pages with new and creative work. Thirty-three are women and fourteen are men.
Thirty-three are Canadian, six are from British Columbia, nine are from the U.S.A., and others reside as far
away as Argentina, Dubai, and the UK.
We chose the work in a blind judging format and let the merit of the poetry fall out of our decisions. Once the
judging was completed, we discovered who would be included in the premier edition.
All writers aspire to publish their work and share it with a wider audience whether they are young or old,
established or emerging. In fact all artists are in an ever-evolving process of emerging. This anthology
presents this evolution in progress and Ascent Aspirations Magazine is proud to be a part of sharing the
creative efforts of the poets presented here.
In the design of the anthology we have not attempted to group writers around topic or theme,
but rather have presented them alphabetically. Within these pages you will find poetic meditations,
classical lyrical verse capturing qualities of time and timelessness, reflections on relationships,
laments on the state of human nature and our planet, social commentary, mythical and archetypal imagery,
Ginsbergesque rants, poetic words spaced on the landscape of the page that leap out into the realm of
performance and the art of the spoken word, poems that show the poet as painter sketching as Kerouac
sketched the life around him, and also poetry that uses comedy to express its own succinct points.
There is an eclectic landscape waiting for you to enter. Settle back, open your hearts and embrace each page.

We live in such a complex, connected world yet often we remain disoriented and distanced
from the harmony we seek. In this edition that looks at issues for a new world century,
our writers grapple with the tough questions facing all of us as cultures clash and
values shift in a global civilization where seclusion and isolation are no longer
luxuries. All countries have their homeless, their drug addicted, the hungry and
they often remain the invisible and the untouchable. There has always been discrimination,
racism, prejudice and each place has its own sad histories surrounding the treatment of
indigenous people, genocide, and the destruction of the natural environment.
In this anthology you will encounter forty-four writers of prose and poetry, who
struggle with these issues of our new world. You as a reader may find answers, new directions,
and evocations for breaking silence and taking action. |

2011
For Canadian Destinations $19.95
For US Destinations $22.95
For International Destinations Other Than US $24.95
SOLD OUT - WILL RE-PRINT FOR ORDERS OF 10 OR MORE
|
Close to Quitting Time is an anthology depicting the various facets of work.
Labour is inherent in our lives, in our memories of loved ones and in the archetypal images
of a lost paradise where the first work began. The work of the sea with its relentless waves
that erode the landscape and the work of nature’s creatures add to the collective abundance
of the earth. Turn over a rotting log and you will find a miniature landscape of moving things,
visible and invisible, all gainfully employed.
Some of us know the graveyard shift at the mill, the hard toil of the prairie,
the patience needed for customer service, the challenge of caregiving, the kneading
of our daily bread, the boredom of the work camp, the slavery of the sweatshop,
and the struggle of thought.
Work is never easy. It can be drudgery; it can be bliss. If one is lucky, it is a passion that can
turn every effort into a form of play.
Inside you will find the varied creative efforts of sixty-eight writers, from six provinces
in Canada, from twelve states in the U.S.A, and from Argentina, Britain, Israel, and Scotland. |
Shadows of Norfolk
Poetry by Bill Perry
Drawings by Steve Perry
2010
For Canadian Destinations $13.95
For US Destinations $14.95
For International Destinations Other Than US $15.95
|
“Bill Perry’s collection of thirteen poems, Shadows of Norfolk, was written in part when he
was growing up in Norfolk, Connecticut in the late 1950s … and other poems were penned when he returned
to Norfolk in 1968.
There is nostalgia — wondering nostalgia — in his writing. In ‘Homecoming,’ the
‘faintly lilac breeze across the Village Green’ offers a ‘composite of a once-was
place’; or in ‘Hillborn,’ ‘Our memories are pathless woods and mountains … We have
dreamed in newcut hayfields drying hot beneath the bluejay summer sky.’
Bill Perry is at his best in his romantic description of a night at a drive-in movie;
in his Gothic treatment of violence and ‘deathical visages’ on a long-ago Halloween
in Norfolk, and in the tragedy that may lie just around the bend on ‘Route 44.’”
— from “Home-grown poet” by Wakeman Hartley, the Register Citizen, July 19, 1984
Shadows of Norfolk takes you back to a small-town 1950s community and captures a sense
of growing up particular to the area but also universal and applicable to anywhere in rural America at that time.
Bill Perry is a British Columbia west coast writer originally from Norfolk, Connecticut who has spent
much of his life in the outdoors as a forester, skier and mountaineer. Currently he lives in British
Columbia and shares his time between Ucluelet, Mount Washington and Vancouver. In recent years he
owned and operated Green Wave Adventures, a company specializing in guided hikes and seaside
scrambles near the Wild Pacific Trail.
Steve Perry attended local schools in northwestern Connecticut and then specialized in Biology in
college and university in Vermont and Boston. He then went to Germany, England, Brazil and Canada
(Calgary), where he conducted biomedical and zoological research on respiration and taught biology
in several different universities. He has authored more than 100 research articles and book chapters,
which he illustrated himself. He presently lives in Bonn, Germany and enjoys choral singing in addition
to outdoor activities and scientific writing. |
One Sweet Ride
An Easy Writers Anthology
2009
For Canadian Destinations $18.00
For US Destinations $21.00
For International Destinations Other Than US $23.00
|
We are the Easy Writers, a group of Vancouver Island writers who were drawn together by a shared love of writing,
and a desire to perfect and perform our work. Our group name is a spoof of the 1969 American road movie Easy Rider
that starred Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper as counterculture bikers. In tribute, each of us took up the challenge
to write a “motorcycle” poem or prose piece to introduce our work in this anthology – and to use in group performances.
(We are frequent performers at Nanaimo’s popular spoken word event, WordStorm, and at other Vancouver Island venues.)
We Easy Writers are an eclectic group. Some of us write poetry or haiku; others favour prose. We all share a love for
the written and spoken word. We invite you to journey through the pages of this anthology, and hope you will find the
trip to be “One Sweet Ride”!
