Tradition or legend has it that Li Bai folded some of his poems into paper boats and sent them floating down a river to the wider world, much as peach blossoms on entering a stream drift far from their source.

The Memory Shop and Other Stories features 10 writers and 10 stories along with 10 artists and their creations of a work of art for each of the stories. This is unique in that the artistic pieces are not illustrations but works of art in their own right.

This year marks one hundred years since the construction of Qualicum Beach’s old school; the building which has become The Old School House (TOSH) Arts Centre. So, it seems a fitting year to launch this book which combines stories for children and works of art by some of TOSH’s artists-in-residence. TOSH’s mission has always been to provide a venue for all forms of art, and art education for all ages; and to support local emerging artists. With the ongoing support of the town of Qualicum this inclusive philosophy has made TOSH an enduring and vibrant focal point for the arts community in Qualicum Beach. The inspiration for this book came from a two-fold desire to unite the written word with the visual image and to support TOSH in a meaningful way.

Firstly the book gave the opportunity for local visual artists, and for writers of children’s stories to present their work. The quality of the stories, submitted through an on-line story contest, exceeded all expectations. At times humorous, touching, or quirky, they provided great inspiration for the works of art, and in turn, have been enriched by the artists’ interpretations. This anthology exposes children to contemporary art as the artists’ interpret the written word. Secondly, this anthology will help support the good work of TOSH in an ongoing way, through the profits from its sale. Public funding for arts endeavours has been diminishing in recent years, yet artistic expression, individually or communally, is an invaluable facet of community life, and we hope TOSH can continue to serve in supporting that for at least another hundred years to come.

Small Corners

Pat Smekal spent some time going through letters, photograph albums and newspaper clippings, with a view to reducing clutter in drawers and cabinets, on shelves, and in an old steamer trunk . The clearing-out process took much longer than anticipated. Of course, the bulk of material was diminished, but by far the more important outcome was that Pat was reminded of people who had touched her life in significant ways, either personally or through their stories. It struck her that whether the connection came about through a familial relationship, a friendship, a brief but meaningful interaction, or even through reading a stranger’s story, these were people she would always remember. The oldest albums on her storeroom shelf had little black corners to hold the photos in place. It’s as if important moments were captured and held, not to be forgotten, just as these people have been captured and imprisoned in her memory. She invites you to meet them, as you browse through her album of poetry.

In this first print edition of Ascent Aspirations Magazine we didn’t set a theme but simply asked our readers and our on-line contributors to submit their best work. We were not looking for anything specific, but we were looking for an eclectic mix of work that would reflect the efforts in poetry of the last eight years of successful publishing on the web.

Forty-seven poets grace these pages with new and creative work. Thirty-three are women and fourteen are men. Thirty-three are Canadian, six are from British Columbia, nine are from the U.S.A., and others reside as far away as Argentina, Dubai, and the UK.

We chose the work in a blind judging format and let the merit of the poetry fall out of our decisions. Once the judging was completed, we discovered who would be included in the premier edition.

All writers aspire to publish their work and share it with a wider audience whether they are young or old, established or emerging. In fact all artists are in an ever-evolving process of emerging. This anthology presents this evolution in progress and Ascent Aspirations Magazine is proud to be a part of sharing the creative efforts of the poets presented here.

In the design of the anthology we have not attempted to group writers around topic or theme, but rather have presented them alphabetically. Within these pages you will find poetic meditations, classical lyrical verse capturing qualities of time and timelessness, reflections on relationships, laments on the state of human nature and our planet, social commentary, mythical and archetypal imagery, Ginsbergesque rants, poetic words spaced on the landscape of the page that leap out into the realm of performance and the art of the spoken word, poems that show the poet as painter sketching as Kerouac sketched the life around him, and also poetry that uses comedy to express its own succinct points.

There is an eclectic landscape waiting for you to enter. Settle back, open your hearts and embrace each page.

Shadows of Norfolk takes you back to a small-town 1950s community and captures a sense of growing up particular to the area but also universal and applicable to anywhere in rural America at that time.


Bill Perry is a British Columbia west coast writer originally from Norfolk, Connecticut who has spent much of his life in the outdoors as a forester, skier and mountaineer. Currently he lives in British Columbia and shares his time between Ucluelet, Mount Washington and Vancouver. In recent years he owned and operated Green Wave Adventures, a company specializing in guided hikes and seaside scrambles near the Wild Pacific Trail.

Steve Perry attended local schools in northwestern Connecticut and then specialized in Biology in college and university in Vermont and Boston. He then went to Germany, England, Brazil and Canada (Calgary), where he conducted biomedical and zoological research on respiration and taught biology in several different universities. He has authored more than 100 research articles and book chapters, which he illustrated himself. He presently lives in Bonn, Germany and enjoys choral singing in addition to outdoor activities and scientific writing.

We are the Easy Writers, a group of Vancouver Island writers who were drawn together by a shared love of writing, and a desire to perfect and perform our work. Our group name is a spoof of the 1969 American road movie Easy Rider that starred Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper as counterculture bikers. In tribute, each of us took up the challenge to write a “motorcycle” poem or prose piece to introduce our work in this anthology – and to use in group performances. (We are frequent performers at Nanaimo’s popular spoken word event, WordStorm, and at other Vancouver Island venues.)

We Easy Writers are an eclectic group. Some of us write poetry or haiku; others favour prose. We all share a love for the written and spoken word. We invite you to journey through the pages of this anthology, and hope you will find the trip to be “One Sweet Ride”!
