Caged

I heard a tapping on my window
in the middle of the night,
my canary was still awake,
she wanted to come in and sit
by my book, she seemed frightened
from the blustering winds of the night,
I turned on my lamp by the chair,
and sat quietly with my pipe
in my mouth, she spoke in soft
tones of problems she was having,
chirping busily about this and that,
I put my hand on her
and put her in my cage,
she started to sing,
and even though I left the door
open, she wouldn’t leave.
