Geodesic Road Tripping
Like a four hundred mile runway,
The flat prairies of Nebraska
Hurl you east toward the Missouri...
And the green, rolling hills of Iowa.
In the rearview mirror,
The setting sun seems to bounce on the horizon
Like a red-orange ball of incandescent glory,
Painting the western sky in psychedelic colors --
Growing darker with the velvet dusk
as it metamorphoses into night.
The car shakes with the wind
And the whoosh of eighteen wheelers
as they hog the road.
Mile after mile, Mcadam blacktop unwinds before you --
While by purest luck, the radio blares out
"On The Road Again,"
And Willie Nelson is there in the dark car with you.
You hear Whitman's America singing
As that lonely car overflows
with all the people you've known and loved,
And the poets and writers who shaped your aspirations
and crafted your dreams,
You suspend reality -- and roll on
Toward morning.
