One Minute But Not For Silence
“Please confine your statements to one minute,” they say.
What should I tell you in one minute: only the trailer and not the movie?
One minute to make my case that a nation
once up with the sun and at rest with the moon
Now rises and shuts with the Wall Street bell.
Truth to tell the tanning bed has usurped the sun
And the moon can’t sleep with 24/7 channel load
One minute to convince you how the six O’clock family meal
Became the eight O’clock microwave
And marking the inches of our children’s growth
Are now measured in mileage away from home
60 seconds to show that “just-in-time” and point of sale
May move our merchandise with efficiency
But we can’t sit still to enjoy our stuff
How the timeless dead of Ludlow
Paid for our eight hour days and five day weeks,
But now the clock is turning backward, and we can’t even stop working to register that time is something Management holds over us like a club
One minute to tick us off and awaken from our rest
Only to find…break’s over
