The Text Goodbye

You curl up beside me in that familiar way
With your arm heavy on my side
Your hand just touching my tummy
And I feel your breath on my neck
You scoop me closer to you like an apology
“I have so much to do tomorrow”
“Lots of meetings”
“Only here for the day"
“I’ll have to go back in the morning”
And you roll over and chat about the day
But I am cold and tired
And I know this will be the last time you will come
I don’t want to look at you when your phone goes off
You gather your things and rush out
Brush a kiss
A short message
“will you be coming back”
“no, I don’t think so”
I knew you will be leaving
I just didn’t think it would be so soon
