Carla Stein One of my earliest memories is finding a portrait absent-mindededly sketched by my mother inside the cover of one of her old books. She called it a doodle. I knew it was a detailed drawing and Saturday lessons at the Art Institute of Chicago ensued. This childhood dance with making art eventually led to a Diploma in Fine Arts from Fanshawe College in London, Ontario.
Along the way I developed a taste for the art of counselling, and completed both a bachelors degree in psychology as well as an M.Ed., while working with children, families, and adults, helping them to heal and create a new ethos for themselves.
Usually, its color that sparks the creation of an image, but I like to use art as social commentary, too. There's never a shortage of things to comment on, from the interactions of individual people to environmental imbalances. And then there is just the fun of playing with ideas that make me laugh. I don't try to fit my work into one category. People have used words like impressionist/ expressionist and Pop surrealism.
My response? "OK. Sure."
I like a lot of different media. Probably because I get bored easily, or maybe it's late onset ADHD (Art Does Happen Daily). I strive for fluid form, deep color and varied textures, always using emotion as a sounding board for the process. Regardless of the medium, I often find my hands and clothing as colorful as the piece I am creating!
I have made my home in Canada since 1975, and currently live in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
Artist Statement:
Carla Stein’s latest work contributes to creating a new universal mytho-paradigm which recognizes even the smallest of terrestrial systems and creatures as interconnected with mankind, and having the rights to dignity, respect, and survival within a balanced planetary ecology. Water, and the many creatures that inhabit it, features as a reminder of our dependence on the great womb of the oceans and references the creation stories common to all civilizations.
Drawing on the writings of Thomas Berry and Joseph Campbell, the series invites us to become aware that we have been taught to see the Earth and its many species as separate from humanity. The planet itself has historically been viewed in the modern era as existing to only serve the desires of mankind. This dualistic thinking has resulted in our current state of climatic crisis as well as the collapse and potential extinction of large numbers of species. As we embrace the full spectrum of life in our world, healing for the planet, its creatures and ourselves can begin to take shape in our visions, dreams, and actions.
