In the hour before Jupiter
reached critical mass
and ignited, I wished
for a new star to wish upon.
Or maybe that is where
the souls of all my friends
who committed suicide
advanced when heaven denied them.
It is a time to adjust
to more light shining down upon us
and the greater inspection
made of our daily lives
now that night cannot
cover up as many misfortunes
as it once hid from the eyes
who looked to see.
The owl starts the long process
of changing the molecules of its eyes
so it sees properly in this newly
illuminated night.
