UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO OCUFA Teaching Award for Professor P. Forsyth From: IN%"mouseion@watarts.uwaterloo.ca" "Robert Fowler" 8-JUL-1994 Professor Phyllis Forsyth of the Department of Classical Studies, University of Waterloo, has been honoured as one of this year's recipients of the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Teaching Awards. The awards are given in recognition of outstanding service to the profession over many years, and in Professor Forsyth's case, for her particular contribution in founding and building up a successful and innovative programme in Classical Studies, in the heart of a technically oriented university not at first expected to be a promising environment for the humanities. The citation mentioned also her activities in the university's distance education programme, her establishment of a mentoring system for new faculty members, and other initiatives pertaining to the enhancement of working conditions for all teachers and scholars in the university. Colleagues across the country, I know, will join us at Waterloo in congratulating Phyllis for this fine achievement. ............................................................................ APPENDIX: Letter from John Yardley, the President of the Classical Association of Canada, to all departmental chairs in Canada: > June 27th, 1994 > > Dear Chair, > > For some years now - in fact ever since Classical Views underwent its > metamorphosis - members of CAC have discussed the possibility of the > publication of a newsletter which would carry items of interest to > Classics Departments and individual members: visiting speakers, > conferences, positions vacant, graduate students on the job market etc. > The issue arose again at the past few council meetings of CAC, and at the > last meeting it was decided that Konrad Kinzl, currently editor of the CAC > directory on Canadian Classicists, be appointed to put in place, with the > cooperation of the Association's Secretary and President, an E-mail > newsletter. It is on this subject that I write to you, and I would ask > you to circulate this letter to all members of your department. > The idea is that the CAC E-mail newsletter - title to be decided - would > be circulated on a monthly basis (with bulletins on important > issues/events released between issues) to all Classics Departments and to > all individual members of CAC who want it. All you need to do is supply > to Konrad Kinzl [....] up-to-date E-mail addresses for your department > and any CAC members in the department who wish to receive the > publication through their own computers. I would ask that, in the case > of members who have no accessto E-mail, you circulate to them a > hard-copy of the newsletter. I must add that this is *not* an > interactive network of the type in existence in the U.S. Information for > the newsletter would have to be submitted each month to Konrad for > inclusion. > At the last council meeting a number of council members raised the point > that some CAC members do not in fact have access to E-mail. I think that > these days the number of people in this category is very small, and will > become even smaller in the years to come. This is therefore a fast and > efficient method of circulating information of interest and importance to > all - news items, for instance, like the 'mergers' of departments > envisaged at UBC and Alberta - and one which overcomes the single > objection *always* raised in the past to a newsletter, namely expense. > The one "cost" will be Konrad Kinzl's time, and we should be grateful to > him for his willingness to donate it to the association. > I therefore ask you to support this venture and communicate to Konrad any > information you have which may interest other members of the Association. > [....] > If you have any questions about the newsletter, and if you wish to supply > news-items, please contact Konrad Kinzl. > > Yours sincerely, > > John Yardley > President, CAC :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: !!!!!!!!!!!
