*ELECTRONIC ANTIQUITY: COMMUNICATING THE CLASSICS* (ISSN 1320-3606)

Peter Toohey (Founding Editor); Ian Worthington (Editor)

Editorial Board: Jenny Strauss-Clay (Virginia); Elaine Fantham

(Princeton);  Joseph Farrell (Pennsylvania);  Sallie Goetsch (Michigan);

Mark Golden (Winnipeg);  Peter Green (Austin);  William Harris (Columbia);

Brad Inwood (Toronto); Barry Powell (Wisconsin); Harold Tarrant

(Newcastle, NSW)

Now in its second year (Volume 2 Issue 3 was published in October 1994),

*Electronic Antiquity* is an international refereed journal for the

Classics edited by Peter Toohey (founding editor) (UNE) and Ian Worthington

(Tasmania). *Electronic Antiquity* also aims to act as a medium through

which scholars (and graduate students) may exchange scholarly and general

views and be kept informed of developments and items of interest affecting

classics and the classics community as a whole. It will exploit the big

advantages of electronic publication: speed, regularity, minimal cost, ease

of production, and relative lack of size restriction. The journal is

published every one or two months.

Contents will include: traditional articles and reviews; kite flying

articles (non-refereed) trying out new ideas and seeking feedback;

reactions, however controversial, to recent books and articles; small-scale

panel or conference Acta since size is not a major problem; articles

summarising the state of play in a particular subject area; reactions to

contributions within the journal; letters to the editors (especially those

making a larger theoretical point or designed to stimulate debate). The

journal also acts as a clearing house for information of interest to

individuals and the wider classical community, such as: work-in-progress

(and requests for information) at graduate and professional levels;

forthcoming seminars, conferences, etc.; books forthcoming; vacancies.

*Electronic Antiquity*, in conjunction with *Scholia. Natal Studies in

Classical Antiquity*, will also preprint selected articles and TOCs from

*Scholia* in advance of its publication.

The editors welcome contributions, which should be e-mailed to them

(following the format requirements as set out in the file Guidelines in the

journal) at the address below.

Subscriptions to *Electronic Antiquity* are free - subscribers receive

automatic notice and list of contents in advance of the lists when another

issue has been published.

CANADIAN FEDERATION OF THE HUMANITIES/FEDERATION CANADIENNE DES ETUDES

                                      HUMAINES

From:	IN%"bulleya@ERE.UMontreal.CA" "Bulley Alan David" 4-NOV-1994

* What is the Humanities Canada Project?

The CFH invites your society to contribute to an ambitious

project that will be of great benefit to the entire humanities

community in Canada. The bilingual project, entitled Humanites

Canada / Humanities Canada (HC), is designed as an electronic

information service that will perform several important functions

for Canadian humanists. First among these functions will be the

creation of a window on humanities resources available on the

"Information Highway." Scholars in the humanities have begun to

reap some of the benefits of the emerging "Highway," but it is

still a common complaint that materials pertinent to humanities

studies are difficult to locate and access. Humanities Canada

will make a significant contribution at just this point by making

possible simple and rapid connections to the resources of major

libraries, government departments, on-line text archives,

electronic journals, archives of digitised art and sound,

academic job announcements, and many other services.

Ultimately, one hopes that the Humanites Canada project will serve

as the prototype for exciting explorations in the "university without

walls" and for new research initiatives in the humanities.

* How Can CFH Member Societies Benefit?

CFH member societies have the opportunity not only to exploit the

resources already available on the world-wide computer networks,

but also to make distinct contributions in their areas of

interest and specialisation. Space is being reserved on the

project computers for each member society to "publish" materials

of use to its members and to others working in the same

discipline. One society, the Canadian Association for Translation

Studies (Association canadienne de traductologie), has already

taken advantage of the Humanities Canada project to make

available information regarding their goals, information on

membership in CATS, a directory of the CATS executive and contact

people, a call for papers for their Annual Congress at the 1995

Learneds at the UQAM, invitations to participate in two special

seminars to be held at the Montreal Learneds, and a detailed

description of the society's journal (_TTR_) including the Tables

of Contents of previous issues. The Humanities Canada project

will also be an ideal place to disseminate discussion documents

and position papers related to annual meetings, to archive

documents related to the society or its field of interest, to

"publish" academic writing, to display art, and to seek out

potential members from a world-wide audience.

* How Does One Connect to Humanities Canada?

Humanities Canada presently exists as a "gopher"

site, available on-line as tornade.ere.umontreal.ca:7071.

A WWW site will be announced shortly. Contributions to HC will be made

available at both sites to ensure maximum access to the project's

contents and offerings.

In addition to the two server sites, an e-mail

discussion list (HUMCAN-L) has also been launched in order to

provide a forum where one can ask questions related to HC and

about how to contribute to it. HUMCAN-L is also the perfect place

to post announcements and comments on the HC project as a whole.

To subscribe to HUMCAN-L, send e-mail to LISTPROC@CC.UMONTREAL.CA

with the following line in the letter body (not in the subject

line):

                Subscribe HumCan-L

You will receive a confirmation of your subscription and a

welcome message explaining all you need to know to interact with

the list and post your messages and questions.

* My Society Is Interested -- What Should We Do Now?

We suggest that each society appoint one individual as a point of

contact between the society executive and the Humanities Canada

managers. This individual should be someone who is at home with

computers and is accessible by e-mail. Nevertheless, the person does

not have to know everything about all the new formats. Our managers

will assist them in what they need to do. Further information

related to the Humanities Canada project is available from the

project managers who may be reached at the following e-mail

addresses:
