CANADIAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE AT ATHENS

From:	IN%"ascsa@leon.nrcps.ariadne-t.gr" "Amerikanikh Sxoli Klasikon

              Spoudon" 4-DEC-1994

Activities and needs of the Canadian Archaeological Institute at Athens

during 1994/95.

Despite rumors to the contrary the Canadian Archaeological Institute at

Athens (or CAIA) still exists and functions in Athens. A number of changes

have happened and will happen, however. We are in the process of

purchasing an apartment for CAIA's offices and library. If possible we

hope to have a small, simple hostel in the new premises. As of December

2nd we have moved from Odos Gennadiou 2B, 115 21 Athens. While a temporary

office with a telephone has yet to be established mail sent to us will

still get to us. As soon as these details and the location of the new

premises are known they will be announced in this Bulletin. CAIA business

can also be conducted through email through June, 1995 via the American

School of Classical Studies, e-mail address acsca@leon.nrcps.ariadne-t.gt.

My user tag there is: dwrupp. (Please address replies explicitly to me.

Messages are shared by all users; please do not send any confidential

material to this account. Address: ASCSA, 54 Souidias St, GR-106 76 Greece.

Telephone: 011-30-1-7236313 and 7236314, from Europe 001 etc.)

Since SSHRCC cut off the funding to CAIA via CMI our library acquisitions

have ceased regrettably. In this transitional period we would like to

continue to have the library grow. We believe that it is important that

our library be a repository in Athens of the work of Canadian scholars

writing on Classical Studies broadly defined and especially on Greek topics

of all periods including modern Greek studies and language. Therefore, I

wish to appeal to the readership of the Bulletin to send us as soon as

possible (and continue to send uson a regular basis) the following

materials:

        1.  offprints of articles, etc.;

        2. extra copies of journal issues (or longer runs), textbooks,

scholarly works, Greek and Latin texts, exhibtion catalogues,

            monographs, preliminary reports of fieldwork,etc.

        3. basic books and journals relating to ancient Mediterranean,

            Anatolian, Cypriote, Syro-Palestinian, Mesopotamian and

Egyptian culture, history, literature, art, architecture and

            archaeology.

Your assistance in this urgent appeal will enable us to better serve our

users and to disseminate as widely as possible the knowledge of the the

work of Canadians to Greek and foreign scholars resident in Greece.

We also hope that more of you will become members of CAIA, support tangibly

our ongoing fund raising efforts to create an endowment for our annual

operating funds and for the purchase, renovation and outfitting of our new

premises in Athens and, of course, come to Greece to use our facilities and

services.

I look forward to your responses and questions!

David W. Rupp, Acting Director

CENTER FOR HELLENIC STUDIES: SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C., in cooperation with the

Committee on Education of the American Philological Association, is pleased

to announce the continuation of its Summer Scholars program in the summer of

1995. Applications are invited from classicists who would like to reside at

the Center in order to use its facilities to pursue their own research

projects (dissertations excluded). Eligible candidates may be faculty

members of any age or rank at a college or university, secondary school

teachers, or independent scholars. Strong preference will be given to

scholars who do not normally have access to a major research library; in

addition, because of the Center's holdings, some preference will be given to

projects that emphasize ancient Greek studies. Former Junior Fellows of the

Center are eligible in the third year, former Summer Scholars in the second

year after their stay at the Center.

The Center for Hellenic Studies is a privately-endowed residential research

institute administered by Harvard University, located on a tranquil wooded

campus near the 'Embassy Row' section of Washington, D.C. It offers a

specialized library of some 40,000 volumes (including almost all the

standard classical journals) as well as access to the _Thesaurus Linguae

Graecae_ on CD-ROM and the Packard Humanities Institute data base for Latin

literature.

The period of residence will begin on Friday, June 16 and end on Monday,

July 24, 1995. Up to nine Summer Scholars will be housed in the Center's

cottages and studio apartments, and will be assessed a modest program fee to

help cover maintenance and library expenses. For further information and

application forms, please contact the Summer Scholars Program, Center for

Hellenic Studies, 3100 Whitehaven Street NW, Washington D.C. 20008, U.S.A.

Telephone (202) 234-3738. Fax (202) 797-3745. Email address:

DB159@UMAIL.UMD.EDU

Applications are due by February 15, 1995. Successful candidates will be

notified early in April.

TOCS-IN

From:	IN%"amphoras@epas.utoronto.ca" "PMW Matheson" 2-DEC-1994 11:07:25.19

TOCS-IN: Tables of Contents of journals of interest to classicists

==================================================================

R. Kallet-Marx (no e-mail during academic leave) This file is

Philippa MW Matheson (amphoras@epas.utoronto.ca) inform.toc on

                                              ftp.epas.utoronto.ca

The journals covered are divided into 15 files: 6 general classics

(CLA) files, 5 archaeology (ARCH), 2 religion and Near Eastern studies

(RLNE), and 2 miscellaneous. The list below shows which journals are

to be found in each file. Instructions for retrieving the files, by

gopher and by ftp, are included at the end of this file.

Issue numbers are given for each journal; one * means we still need a

volunteer, to type in the TOC for the journal; two ** means the

journal is already being entered by a volunteer. If you are able to

volunteer for any journal marked with *, to type in Tables of Contents

for each new issue (beginning with the first issue published in 1992),

please send e-mail to Philippa Matheson, amphoras@epas.utoronto.ca.

(Actually, Bob Kallet-Marx is handling all this, but is currently

"e-mail challenged" at Princeton IAS).

Journals not marked with an asterisk are mostly available from the

UnCover database at the University of Colorado. The UnCover service

will fax copies of articles to their subscribers -- you may have

access to UnCover and/or to the article faxing service through your

university library.

Last general update: Nov 12 94 (files for 1992-1994). There are now

3191 articles from 346 issues of 127 journals for 1992 (0 NEW).

2683 305 116 1993 (0 NEW).

1227 149 60 1994 (91 NEW).

Journals marked NEW have one or more issues in the NEW[yr].TOC files.

NB: ftp access to the tocs-in directory at Toronto is now to a new

node: ftp.epas.utoronto.ca. Access through gopher (and lynx) is

unchanged (gopher gopher.epas.utoronto.ca), but now both forms of

the data are in the Toronto menus, original files under the EPAS

menu, and the UVa WAIS-indexed files under Centre for Computing

and the Humanites. See ftp/gopher/lynx instructions below.

The TOC files are available by anonymous ftp from ftp.epas.utoronto.ca,

or by gopher or lynx. They include:

Information_on_tocs   = inform.toc, this file

Where_do_I_find... journals listed alphabetically with the

filenames they can be found in

The main directories where the tocs are grouped by subject and date

  cla92/ cla93/ etc

The "new" files new issues acquired since the last update

Extra directories with duplicated material, for searching etc:

x-indexes/ alphabetical list of articles, index of authors

x-old/ old "new" files, i.e., the articles added to

the subject files in the last update

*GOPHER*

The .toc files can be retrieved by the menu-driven gopher program,

from a searchable (WAIS-indexed) copy of the data maintained at the

University of Virgina. These files are updated regularly from the

original archive, and presented in library bibliography format. For UVa,

gopher to "gopher.lib.virginia.edu," then choose #13 ("Alphabetical

Organization") and #48 (TOCS-IN). Also available through Penn: gopher to

"ccat.sas.upenn.edu", then choose #9 ("Electronic Publications and

Resources"), then #18 (TOCS-IN). For both, search the TOCS-IN files by

choosing #3 in the TOCS-IN menu.

The original archive at ftp.epas.utoronto.ca can also be reached by

gopher at the University of Toronto. These files are always up to

date, and are formatted with <> codes marking the beginning and end of

each field which can be globally replaced to format the data for use

with different database programs. Gopher to "gopher.epas.utoronto.ca",

choose #4 (EPAS ftp) from the main menu, then #8 (pub/) and #11

(tocs-in); alternatively, choose #5 (Centre for Computing and the

Humanities) from the main menu, then #5 (Other academic resources),

then #13 (Classics), and then #6 (TOCS-IN), which will connect you

with the WAIS-indexed (searchable) files at UVa.

Notes:

a) If your Gopher client has the capability to insert "bookmarks" you

will be able to be able to set it up to bring you to the TOCS-IN

files without going through the cumbersome series of menus. Type

"a" at the spot in the sequence of menus where you would like to

insert a bookmark. If you Gopher client supports bookmarks, you

will be prompted for a name. Thereafter, to return to the same

spot, type "v" while you are anywhere in Gopher and select the

   appropriate bookmark name.

b) Some gophers "guess" that the archXX-X.toc files are binary

(they are marked in one) -- ignore, they are all normal

   ascii text files.

*FTP*

If you have an internet address and can use interactive ftp, give the

command "ftp ftp.epas.utoronto.ca." Then during the login process give

"anonymous" for your user name, and your full e-mail address as the

password. Then give the following commands:

    ftp> cd pub/tocs-in

    ftp> dir

    ftp> get inform.toc

    ftp> quit

When you know (after reading inform.toc) which files you want, use

the "get" commands to get the individual files you want from the

directory where they are stored. E.g.,

   get new93.toc cla92/cla92-1.toc cla93/cla93-1.toc arch92/arch92-4.toc

You can have more than one get command in each session, or use "mget"

to specify multiple files: e.g.,

   mget cla92/* rlne93/*

*Lynx*

The Lynx program is now available on many machines for searching WWW

files, but it also interacts with gopher to do the same searches and

retrievals. It is fast and easy to use, and can be used with the

information given for gopher above. Type "lynx" as a command on your

mainframe, and follow the menus! Or you can give the 'g' (go) command to

jump straight to an URL address. The URL addresses for TOCS-IN are:

gopher://gopher.lib.Virginia.EDU/11/alpha/tocs, and

gopher://gopher.epas.utoronto.ca/1ftp%3aftp.epas.utoronto.ca%40/pub/tocs-in/
