C'est avec beaucoup de tristesse que le Departement d'Etudes anciennes de

l'Universite d'Ottawa vous annonce le deces du professeur Pierre

Brind'Amour, survenu le 27 janvier.  Ancien du College Jean-de-Brebeuf de

Montreal et titulaire d'un doctorat de l'Universite de Strasbourg en France,

Pierre Brind'Amour etait depuis 1962, a l'age de 21 ans, professeur a

l'Universite d'Ottawa au Departement d'Etudes anciennes.  Il fut promu au

rang de professeur titulaire en 1985 et occupa des postes de haute

responsabilite academique a son departement.  Il est l'auteur d'un ouvrage

savant sur le Calendrier Romain et a publie tout recemment une monographie

intitulee Nostradamus Astrophile.  Son ouvrage en cours, une edition des

"Centuries de Nostradamus" sera publie dans un futur rapproche.  Il laisse

derriere lui une carriere academique marquee par l'excellence et le souvenir

d'un etre humain aime et respecte par ses collegues et etudiants.



The Department of Classical Studies of the University of Ottawa announces

with deepest regret the passing of Pierre Brind'Amour in Ottawa on Friday

January 27, 1995 at the age of 53.  He had suffered from terminal cancer

and had been on sick leave from the university from mid-October 1994. A

graduate of the College Jean-de-Brebeuf in Montral and holder of a PhD from

the University of Strasbourg, Pierre Brind'Amour had held an appointment at

the University of Ottawa since 1962 at the age of 21.  He was the author of

some twenty-five articles published in the Revue des etudes anciennes,

Latomus, Hermes, Classical Views, Phoenix, Maia, Analecta Bollandiana,

Classical Philology, and Les Cahiers des Etudes anciennes among others.  He

was also a contributor to the Aufstieg und Niedergang der roemischen Welt

and the Le Dictionnaire des oeuvres, and an editor of the Melanges Etienne

Gareau. He had also written two books, the first entitled Le calendrier

romain Ottawa (PUO), 1983 and the second, Nostradamus astrophile Ottawa

(PUO) and Paris (Klincksieck), 1993.  He had finished the text of a third

book, a critical edition of the centuries of Nostradamus just before he

fell ill. He is survived by his wife Marthe LEDOUX, his two children

Antoinette and Jean-Pierre, his father and his sister.

                       POSITION IN EXCAVATION



The DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS of the UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA invites

applications for a position of archaeological illustrator to assist in the

excavations at Eleusis, June 12-30 1995.  The project offers accommodation,

airfare, and a remuneration of $500.00 per week. Preference will be given

to candidates with a degree in Fine Arts or Architecture, who are

experienced illustrators of archaeological material, especially Mycenaean

and Cycladic pottery.  Additional skills and experience in architectural

drawing and photography are also desirable.  Please send letter of

   The ONTARIO CLASSICAL ASSOCIATION will hold its 51st annual spring

meeting on Saturday, April 22, 1995, at the University of Waterloo. The

theme will be "Vanished Civilizations." The program includes illustrated

papers by Martin Kilmer ("Sex and Death: Greek and Etruscan Erotica in

Etruscan Tombs"), Clinton Smith ("Celtic Oppida and Trade"), and Phyllis

Forsyth ("Bronze Age Thera").

The Department of Classics of the University of Manitoba is offering a

summer course in Oropos, Greece 26 May-June 9, 1995.  The course,

3.246-Field Studies in Greek History and Archaeology (6), is made up of two

parts.  The academic part consists of three weeks of intensive on-campus

lectures on Greek History and Archaeology and Archaeological Methodology. 

These lectures are followed by a two-week field trip to Greece.  During the

trip students attend classes and visit  the following sites and museums:

Acropolis, Athens National Museum, Agora, Roman Agora, Olympieion, Eleusis,

Sounion, Delphi, Ancient Corinth, Mycenae, Argos Museum, Nafplion Museum,

Eretria, and Amphiareion. -- The archaeological part of the course is the

Oropos Survey Project, a surface survey of the area of Oropos [cf. *AJA*

1990, 328; 1991, 332; *Ephemeris* 1988, 175-198; 1989, 163-175; *BCH* 115

(1991), 852; *IJNA* 18 (1989), 273-276].  Students will be taught the basics

of survey methodology, including study of settlement pattern, artifact

analysis, and archaeological drawing. -- The overall course is designed to

give students a dense, first-hand knowledge of ancient Greek civilization

from the Bronze Age to the Roman period and a direct experience of

archaeological fieldwork in Greece.  Cost: CAD 1800.00, includes all

The Classics DRAMA Group at TRENT UNIVERSITY is presenting Euripides'

*Elektra* for six performances in March.  The company is composed of

classics students enrolled mainly in first- and second-year literature

courses, in which Greek tragedy plays a significant role.  Like last year's

production of *Hippolytos*, the tragedy will be performed in the "Pit" at

Lady Eaton College, Trent University, an excellent space for this type of

drama.  Performances take place March 15, 16, 18, 21, 22, 23, beginning at

8:00 p.m. Tickets ($4) available at the door or in advance by e-mail to the

This message is intended to present our journal to scholars engaged in the

study of the ancient Mediterranean. The MHR was founded in 1986 by a group

of scholars at Tel Aviv University. It is published biannually by F. Cass,

London. The MHR is interested in publishing articles on Mediterranean

history ranging from antiquity to the modern area. Its policy is to

encourage publication of articles which treat the Mediterranean as a region

with its own cultural traits, and which focus on interconnections and

influences within a Mediterranean context, or on questions of comparative

and comparable nature. Articles   are subject to peer review. The journal

has acquired an excellent and wide-spread reputation in the international

academic community and may be found in hundreds of public and university

libraries the world over. 



The MHR also includes a section entitled Testimonia, dedicated to annotated

documents which are suitable to the publishing policy described above, as

well as book reviews and a section listing publications received.
