DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS

From:	IN%"pswarney@YorkU.CA" "Paul Swarney" 13-MAY-1995

              JUDITH ROSNER-SIEGEL

Quis desiderio sit pudor aut modus tam cari capitis?

Classical Studies at York University announces with great sadness the death

of Judith Rosner-Siegel on Sunday 7 May. She died peacefully after a

long and persistent battle against cancer and after completing the essays

and examinations which she insisted on bringing with her during her final

stay in hospital.

Judith Rosner arrived at the University of Toronto in 1974 with an

undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College and an M.A. from the Graduate

Center of the City University of New York. Those who were fellow students

and her teachers will remember her determination to conquer ancient authors

and the challenges placed before the Ph.D. student in those legendary

days. This same dynamism stayed with her and continued to grow in every

phase and venue of her teaching and scholarship. She had spent four years

at the University of Texas before returning to Toronto. In Ontario,

Waterloo and Brock each saw her at work. But it was at York where she came

to be a giant among teaching staff in Classical Studies and in the Division

of Humanities. To say that her students adored her is an understatement.

The root of this adoration was her deep respect for each of her students

and their welfare both in her courses and in their undergraduate careers.

She was the first recipient of a teaching award in Humanities, an award now

fittingly named the Judith Rosner-Siegel Award. The courses that she

helped design are now basic courses both in Humanities and Classical

Studies. And the past many years have seen her and Sandy McKay

triumphantly at the helm of a flagship course in mythology.

Her published work, although modest, is known to many and notable both for

insight into her authors but most importantly for her reaching out beyond

the safe and sure to explore the edges of our discipline. Her papers at

the CAC and other occasions on Lucan, Homer, Ovid, magic and witches were

always challenging her audience to journey with her to the borders where

disciplines and cultures intersect.

All this energy seemed to fire rather than tire her in all her various

roles. As Academic Advisor in Vanier College here at York she was a key

orchestrator of College life, pushing students and fellows to levels of

collegiality that will be difficult to achieve again. And in a final burst

of heroic virtus she successfully challenged the Province on behalf of

cancer patients. She never asked for sick leave during her illness.

Instead she scheduled treatments and hospital stays during breaks or at the

end of the week. Her academic colleagues and her many friends shall not

see her equal.

She is survived by her husband and two young daughters to whom she was

devoted with the same energy that she displayed in the University. A

Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday 24 May in the Dining Hall of

Vanier College at 11:00 A.M. A scholarship fund in her name has been

established at Vanier College. Contributions may be made by cheque to York

University sent to: The Office of the Master, Vanier College, York

University, 4700 Keele Street, North York, Ontario, M3J 1P3.

She will be missed and she will be remembered.

Durum: sed levius fit patientia quicquid corrigere est nefas.

THE CANADIAN ACADEMIC INSTITUTE IN ATHENS

                   Progress Report on Fund-Raising

With little more than a month and a half left to raise the final $16,000

for our new quarters at 7 Aiginitou St. in Athens, the Canadian Academic

Institute has now received just over $2300 in donations or pledges from the

Classical community in Canada. This is a heartening start towards our goal,

and great thanks are owed to those who have responded to our urgent appeal.

This morning we received word from Prof. David Rupp, CAIA's director in

Athens this past year, that the North Aegean Petroleum Company (Canadian

owned) has made a donation of about 1 million drachmas ($6000) towards the

purchase of the new quarters and has contributed even more towards the

renovations presently being carried out on the suite to get it ready for

the Annual Meeting of the Institute on June 2. This still leaves us with a

little less than $8000 to raise. One anonymous donor has offered to match

the highest private donation received in the appeal, to a limit of $2000.

It would be nice to take advantage of this generosity. Please remember that

donations are tax deductible and may be sent to Prof. Sheila Campbell,

Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies, 59 Queen's Park Cres., Toronto,

M5S 2C4.

INEXPENSIVE SEARCH PROGRAMME FOR THESAURUS LINGUAE GRAECAE AND PACKARD

HUMANITIES INSTITUTE CD-ROM DISKS FOR PC USERS

I have been using Musaios for several months on a PC (486 with 8 MB of

RAM). Although it cannot compete with the speed of the Ibycus for mere

searches, I found it quite satisfactory. It costs only USD 65.00 (not DEM

800.00 as the one from Halle announced in *Gnomon* 63 (1991) 670f.).

Because the programme has at this point no font of its own, it reproduces

many of the special symbols used in epigraphy and papyrology on the PHI 6

disk as numerical codes on your screen. For printing Greek (except again

from PHI 6), Dr. Peter Gentry's (55 Ambercroft Blvd., Scarborough ON M1W

2Z6; see below on FTP transfer) WinGreek is required (USD 35.00). Transfer

of the programme to your local machine by FTP is easy.

                                MUSAIOS 1.0c

Software for use with the TLG and PHI CD-ROM discs

by Darl J. Dumont and Randall M. Smith

Musaios is an entirely new program by the authors of Pharos for Microsoft

Windows 3.1, which provides the ability to display and search Greek and

Latin-alphabet texts from Thesaurus Linguae Graecae's new CD ROM D, and the

Packard Humanities Institute's CD ROMs 5 and 6. The current version is for

Windows only. The Macintosh version is currently under development.

The current release of the software, version 1.0c, offers the ability to

display several texts on the screen simultaneously, full support of the TLG

Word Index, including the ability to view directly all citations for each

word from within the index, and the ability to export text to other Windows

applications (e.g. Word for Windows) via the Windows Clipboard. There is a

basic word search capability, including limited Boolean capabilities.

Currently "and", "or", "and then", and "and not" operators between two

terms are supported as are single character wildcards ("?") and character

sets ("[ae]"). These capabilities will be elaborated in a subsequent

upgrade. There is also the ability to create a permanent list of favorite

authors for word searches.

Searching is done "in background" which means that a search can be started

then other work continued. As initial results come in, the locations that

have been found can be viewed without having to wait for the search to

complete. Any search may also be canceled instantly.

The program runs under Microsoft Windows 3.1x on PC-compatible computers.

Windows 3.1 or higher is required; the program will definitely not run

under Windows 3.0. Musaios also runs on Windows NT and the beta release

(Beta 2) of Windows 95. We intend in the future to take full advantage of

new Windows features added by Microsoft and others.

Minimum recommended hardware:

80386 or higher processor, with 2 MB of RAM (bare minimum--4 MB

   recommended, 8MB is better yet).

3.5 inch floppy disk drive and Microsoft-compatible mouse.

At least 30 MB hard disk drive (absolute bare minimum--80 MB recommended,

   200 MB is better yet).

VGA display capable of displaying at least 640 by 480 pixels in 16 colors.

   (256 colors recommended).

CD ROM Drive with a minimum transfer rate of 150 K bytes per second.

Version 1.0c for Windows is fully released and is now being distributed. In

order to keep our costs low, the preferred method of distribution is

electronically, via FTP. The current registration fee is $65 US. Upon

receipt of the $65 registration fee, we will send you a registration number

by E-mail or surface mail. If you cannot obtain Musaios electronically, we

will send it on a disk, provided you request one when you send your check.

If requesting diskettes, there is a shipping and handling charge of $10

($21 outside of USA) to cover the cost of mailing the disk by Priority or

Express Mail. Please send checks (in U.S. funds), made payable to Darl J.

Dumont, to: Darl J. Dumont, 15237 Sunset Boulevard, Suite 20, Pacific

Palisades, California 90272. Alternatively, we can accept University

purchase orders and supply a pro-forma invoice, or we can accept funds by

direct wire transfer (please contact us at one of the following addresses

for details).

We may be reached electronically at:

	rsmith1@cerf.net	(Randall Smith)

	ddumont1@cerf.net	(Darl Dumont)

We may also be reached by FAX at:

	310-454-4819

Electronic Distribution via FTP

To obtain a copy of Musaios electronically, FTP to "ftp.cerf.net". Use

"anonymous" as the login name and give your E-mail address as the password.

Change to the directory /pub/vendor/musaios by giving the command "cd

/pub/vendor/musaios". Be sure to set the transfer mode to binary by giving

the "binary" command. (Some systems may also require the command "tenex".)

Note that the transfer between your Internet machine and your PC (if they

are not the same) must also be a binary mode transfer or the file will be

corrupted. Type "get mus10b.exe" to obtain the file containing the Musaios

program and manual. We have arranged with the authors of WinGreek to

distribute their font package along with Musaios. If you do not already

have a copy of WinGreek you should also get the file "wgreek18.exe". Note

that WinGreek is not part of Musaios and you must register it with its

authors (not with us) within 30 days or erase it from your computer. To

install Musaios copy mus10c.exe to a floppy disk or a temporary directory

on your hard disk and execute it. This will cause the necessary

installation files to extract themselves. Then run the program

"setup.exe", which is a standard Windows setup program. If you obtained

WinGreek from us, install it the same way. If you obtained it from another

source, install it according to the instructions which came with it.

PS [by R. Smith]: If someone is aggressively pursuing Windows NT, Windows

95, or even Win32s on their system, we do have a test version of a 32-bit

version of Musaios available from our FTP site, and we would be interested

in having some advanced users give it a try to help us spot bugs,

compatibility problems, etc.
