UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO:

From:	IN%"mouseion@watarts.uwaterloo.ca" "Robert Fowler" 2-NOV-1995

The Department is at full strength this year, with everyone back from

sabbatical. Nicholas Maes, who replaced Bob Fowler last year, has found a

position at Toronto; his presence at UW was most beneficial and we wish

him and his family all the best. On 18 Oct. we welcomed, together with

WLU, CAC speaker Keith Bradley, who lectured on Roman slavery to a

spellbound survey course (and a good audience of other attenders) at the

cruel hour of 9:30 - such is the schedule of the stalwart CAC itinerants.

Our in-house speaker this term is Robert Porter, who will lecture on 16

Nov. at 3:30 in Modern Languages 246 on "Greek Land Warfare: The Failure

of Stereotypes." All welcome!

TRAINING EXCAVATION IN BRITAIN: CLASSICAL STUDIES 335

The 'Lunt' Fort at Baginton, Warwickshire

August, 1996

The Department of Classics at the University of British Columbia will

conduct a training excavation in August 1996 at the 'Lunt', a Roman fort in

central England, first built under Nero (in approx. 6O AD) in connection

with the revolt of Boadicea. Excavation began in the 196O's, and in 1988

UBC began work on the western defences. The site is well-known for the

reconstruction of areas where excavation is completed, including part of

the eastern rampart and gateway, granary (now the site museum) and gyrus

(cavalry training enclosure).

Students are trained in all aspects of excavation, and subject to

satisfactory performance obtain six credits for Classical Studies 335,

equivalent to one full-year course. Students from other universities may

take the course for transfer credit. There are no prerequisites.

The practicum will last for four weeks, from July 29- August 23 There will

be a number of free days. Visiting lecturers will come to the site, and

excursions to other places of interest will be organized at moderate cost.

Baginton is located near Coventry (direct bus service to London Airports),

very close to Warwick, Stratford-on-Avon and the Cotswolds.

Accommodation is at the University of Warwick (two miles from the site) in

five-person flats with private bedrooms and self-catering facilities. The

campus offers extensive eating and entertainment facilities. Costs:

students make their own travel arrangements to Britain and register at UBC

with the appropriate fee. A charge of 345 pounds covers the cost of

accommodation, local staff, excavation fees, daily transportation and

refreshments on the site for the whole period.

A deposit of $1OO (made out to 'A.A. Barrett') is required. Early

registration is recommended. In the event of cancellation, the deposit is

refunded if the place is filled.

For further details: Anthony A. Barrett, Department of Classics, University

of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. V6T 1Z1 Tel: (6O4) 822-4O64 (office),

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF RHETORIC - CALL FOR PAPERS

ELEVENTH BIENNIAL CONFERENCE, SASKATOON, CANADA, 22-26 JULY 1997

THE GRECO-ROMAN RHETORICAL TRADITION: ALTERATIONS, ADAPTATIONS, ALTERNATIVES

"The Greco-Roman Rhetorical Tradition: Alterations, Adaptations,

Alternatives" will be the theme of the Eleventh Biennial Conference of the

International Society for the History of Rhetoric at the University of

Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada, 22-26 July 1997.

The focus on "Alterations" and "Adaptations" recognizes that the

art of rhetoric has emerged and changed with the societies that have

produced the Greco-Roman tradition of discourse or adapted it to new

institutional and cultural conditions and uses throughout its history. The

focus on "Alternatives" acknowledges other discourses that have challenged

and continue to challenge the Greco-Roman tradition wherever Europeans have

transplanted it throughout the world.

Proposals for 20-minute papers in English, French, German, Italian

or Spanish should be submitted by 9 February 1996 to the ISHR President.

Please contact her for a form: Professor Judith Rice Henderson, Dept of

English 9 Campus Dr., University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon SK, Canada

S7N 5A5; Telephone: (306) 966-5497, Fax: (306) 966-5951, Email:

HENDRSNJ@duke.usask.ca

A seminar on "WOMEN AND THE RHETORICAL TRADITION" will be organized

by Professor Christine Sutherland. Scholars wishing to contribute on this

topic should submit proposals directly to her by the deadline of 9 February

1996. Since the Society may publish proceedings of this seminar,

participants will be asked to circulate completed papers in the autumn of

1996. Contact: Professor Christine Sutherland, University of Calgary,

Faculty of General Studies, 2500 University Dr NW, Calgary, AB, Canada

T2N 1N4; Telephone: (403) 220-7339, Fax: (403) 282-6716, E-mail:

SUTHERLA@acs.ucalgary.ca

The Society will be applying for a modest conference grant to

assist the travel of participants who cannot otherwise attend. Graduate

students, independent scholars, and other scholars who expect inadequate

government/institutional support should enclose with their proposals a

brief explanation of their circumstances and a realistic budget. Support

subsequently awarded by other sources must be reported immediately to

Professor Henderson.

The International Society for the History of Rhetoric promotes the

study of both the theory and practice of rhetoric in all periods and

languages and the relationship of rhetoric to poetics, literary theory and

criticism, philosophy, politics, religion, law, and other aspects of the

cultural context. The Society is not concerned with the furthering of

practical rhetorical skills as such.

Scholars may join the ISHR by subscribing to its official journal,

Rhetorica, published quarterly. To subscribe, send U.S. $40 (U.S. $16 for

students) to: Rhetorica, University of California Press, Journals Division,

2120 Berkeley Way #5812, Berkeley, CA 94720-5812, USA. Orders by Visa or

MasterCard only may be faxed to (510) 642-9917.

Statius in the Court of Domitian: A Fresh Assessment

The year 1996 will mark the 1900th anniversary of the deaths of the emperor

Domitian and of Statius, the celebrated Flavian poet closely associated

with him. Commemoration of the deaths of Domitian and Statius, and a

renewed interest in the Flavian, particularly Domitianic, monuments in

Campania, signal the need for a reassessment of Statius and his works. --

Publius Papinius Statius (A.D. 45-96), who was deeply influenced by Vergil,

was a favorite of Dante and Chaucer but his importance has generally been

minimized in literary history. He has again received scholarly attention

abroad, however, as reflected in important new critical studies and

translations in England and the Netherlands, but less commonly in North

America. It is now time to progress beyond thematic analysis and genre

criticism of Silver Age poetry to contemporary critical methodologies

applied particularly to Statius' Thebaid, Achilleid, and Silvae. -- The

Vergilian Society invites submission of papers which will provide fresh

assessment of Statius and his works, and that will launch a long overdue

reevaluation of Flavian, particularly Domitianic, monuments. We are

particularly interested in a) new approaches to the Achilleid, b)

intertextual examination of Vergil's influence on the Neapolitan/Roman

poet, c) critical analysis of recent research (e.g., Pavlovskis, Vessey,

Newmyer, Alex Hardie and Philip Hardie) and of critical editions of the

Thebaid and Silvae (e.g., Van Dam, Smolenaars, Coleman, Hill, and Dewar),

and d) papers which provide sensitive response to the poet's visual

imagination (including psychological aspects) in its contemporary Flavian

and Campanian contexts. -- The Vergilian Society panel on Statius at the

APA will complement a special session on "The Impact of Domitian on

Campania," to be held 5-17 July 1996 at the Villa Vergiliana, Cumae, Italy.

This international colloquium in Italy, involving Italian, British, Dutch,

and North American participants, will examine Flavian architecture,

engineering, social life, literature and art. The APA panel, complemented

by the overseas event, will provide important and provocative guidelines

for continuing discussion of Statius' works. -- Papers should be between

15-20 minutes in length. Abstracts should be between 500 and 800 words,

prepared according to the APA's rules for preparing Individual Abstracts.

All abstracts will be judged anonymously by a specially appointed panel of

referees. They should be sent with an identifying cover letter to the

Secretary-Treasurer of the Vergilian Society, John A. Dutra, P. O. Box 817,

Oxford Ohio 45056, no later than February 1, 1996.

THE WOMEN'S CLASSICAL CAUCUS

-- What is the Women's Classical Caucus? -- The Women's Classical Caucus is

an organization for all women and men concerned with the position of women

in classics today, the study of women in antiquity, and/or feminist

scholarship. It has existed since 1972, as a group affiliated with the

American Philological Association, and is actively involved with all issues

to do with women in the profession.

Members of the WCC belong to all branches of classical studies. We welcome

anyone interested in the ancient world, including students and school

teachers. Membership in the APA or AIA is not necessary.

The WCC is run by an eight-member steering committee headed by two

co-chairs. Two new members of the steering committee are elected annually

by the membership. The views and preferences of all members are solicited

and welcomed by the steering committee.

The WCC holds an annual public Business Meeting at the APA/AIA convention.

Its date, time and location are listed in the APA program. Anyone

interested in learning more about the caucus is encouraged to attend. The

WCC also has an information table in the book display room.

-- What does the Women's Classical Caucus do? -- Publishes a twice-yearly

newsletter with articles, book reviews, news of current sexual harassment

and discrimination cases, calls for papers, syllabi job announcements and

more.

Provides publicity and assistance for victims of discrimination and

harrassment, and a support network for these and others in need.

Promotes the study of women in antiquity, feminist scholarship and other

new methodologies, especially through its annual panel at the APA

meetings.

Current projects include outreach to AIA and members and Canadians, and

pressuring the APA to make the convention program more diverse and

accessible.

-- How to join the Women's Classical Caucus -- The WCC depends on the

support of its members. For annual dues of only $12.00 (or $3.00 for

students), you can contribute to the visibility and influence of women in

classics by joining the caucus. Institutional and life memberships are

also available (for $10 and $125 respectively).

[RE: *LIVERPOOL CLASSICAL MONTHLY*] The editor, Dr. John Pinsent, passed

away on Feb. 3, 1995, after a lengthy illness. Obviously this created a

lengthy hiatus. His wife, Helena V. Hunt, is continuing publishing the

journal. April and May of Vol. 19 are "almost complete" and she expects to

have things back to normal as quickly as possible. Ms Hunt may be reached

From Allan Evans, University of British Columbia. One item for your "Books

by Members" section. My `The Age of Justinian: the Circumstances of

Imperial Power' will be published by Routledge (London) in March, 1966.

I shall also be resigning as editor of `Studies in Medieval and Renaissance

History' after the present volume (no. 15) is published. I have been first

editor, and then co-editor of this series since 1977. I hope that `Studies'

will be carried on by two historians at the University of Victoria, but at

the moment, arrangements are not yet final. `Studies in Medieval and

Renaissance History' was chosen by the `Times Literary Supplement' as the

one history journal it chose to review in its `Learned Journals' supplement

Nov. 25, 1995. - Yours, J. A. S. (Allan) Evans. jaevans@unixg.ubc.ca
