PAST PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
From: IN%"jcyard@aix1.uottawa.ca" 29-MAY-1996
I am sure you are aware, from recent informations through this medium, of
the proposals presented to the Association AGM at Brock last month to meet
the budgetary crisis facing us as a result of the cuts in funding from
SSHRC. These proposals were, in essence:
1. A reduction in the size of the Association's council to 14 (8
executive members, including journal editors, and 6 members at large), and
the limitation of the Fall council meeting to the executive.
2. A 50% increase in dues (from $50 to $75 for ordinary members)
3. Withdrawal of the Association from CFH (now HSSFC).
For those unable to attend the meeting I now report that items 1 and 2 were
carried unanimously (in the case of item 2, the increase for all but
life-membership to take effect Jan 1st 1997; for life-membership
immediately). Item 3 was tabled for discussion at the 1997 AGM.
This has been a long process, extending from the Eliot-Tiffou motion at the
Montreal AGM, through a Fall executive and Spring Full Council meeting, to
last month's AGM, but it was, I think, a very valuable one since it has put
the Association on the sound financial basis necessary to meet the
challenges of the coming years. I take this opportunity of thanking the
council members of this past year and those present at the AGM for their
support and confidence.
John Yardley,
Past President, CAC

EDITOR'S REMARKS:
Professor John Porter, University of Saskatchewan, has agreed to serve as
acting editor during my 1996-97 sabbatical year. I believe all recipients
of the newsletter and all members of the CAC/SCEC will join me in thanking
Professor Porter for being willing to sacrifice some of his time to keep
the newsletter going. He will also take over responsibility for the
Association's electronic site on the World Wide Web
(http://137.122.12.15/Docs/Societies/ClassAC/Classics.Assoc.html)
which includes responsibility for our discussion list Classics-Canada.
All URLs will remain the same; communications, however, should be sent,
from the point of a Special Release in which Professor will announce his
take-over and test the setup for him here at Trent, to
porterj@duke.usask.ca.
I should like to thank all colleagues who have been patiently enduring my
learning process from the "zero" issue onwards and who have been kind
enough to support my attempts with kind words.
The WWW site is, suspect, still underused (although in the first year or so
we had 1000 enquiries for e-mail addresses alone). I reproduce here the
home page, in order to remind you of the information offered--including an
updated on-line version of *Classical Studies in Canadian Universities*
(based on the second edition in hard-copy of 1995) which now offers active
links to departmental (and some personal) home pages. The electronic
version allows one to search for areas of specialisation (there is,
deplorably, no such index in the hard-copy version), or anything else, by
means of one's browser's search features.

DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO:
From: IN%"hmason@chass.utoronto.ca" "Hugh Mason" 29-MAY-1996
(1) As some of you may know, Willard McCarty has taken a position
in London (Eng).
* Quod bonum felix faustumque sit.*
His message to me follows:
To: Hugh Mason
From: Willard McCarty
No, I don't mind if you fiddle the news from the roof, or cry it to the
heavens. I should set down the details here, since I haven't put them online
yet.
The appointment is as Senior Lecturer in Humanities Computing, in a new
academic department of King's College London known as the Centre for
Computing in the Humanities. (Honest, the irony is unintentional.) The
CCH-London has an undergraduate minor programme in place and cooperative
arrangements with most departments of the humanities for training of
post-graduates. We don't yet have a post-grad programme, but there are
plans. The dept. consists of an administrative head at professorial level,
though not professorial rank (Harold Short), me as Senior Lecturer, a
Lecturer (Lynne Grundy), one support person now appointed (Gillian Barnes),
and others coming.
(2) Christer Bruun will be teaching at Odense in Denmark in second
term 96-7 (it would be cruel to call it the Spring Semester, unless
Odense is much more temperate than Toronto). *kalon kai eutyches genoito,*
or however the Latin formula will go in Greek. I won't try Danish.
It took a long time to work out the details of something that has been
in the works for some time, which is why we moved Livy (Lat 311H) to
first term. From my bureaucratic perspective, it means that CLA 231S
(Intro Roman History) will be taught be good ol' reliable T.B.A
(Theodoros Basiliou Andronikos?); seriously, John Grant should be
advertising for a PT appointment soon.

UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO:
From: IN%"mouseion@watarts.uwaterloo.ca" "Robert Fowler" 12-JUN-1996
On June 4 the Board of Governors of the University of Waterloo approved the
creation of the Department of Anthropology and Classical Studies effective
1 September 1996. The chair of the new joint department has not yet been
appointed, but Phyllis Forsyth has agreed to act as Interim Chair for a
period of up to one year. A steadier hand at the helm in a time of
transition could scarcely be imagined.
As you know we were authorized to make a tenure-track appointment in
connection with this merger. We received many applications from people with
qualifications in both fields, all of them impressively versatile, but none
in our estimation with sufficient depth in both disciplines to warrant an
appointment at this time. We have therefore applied to Human Resources
Canada for permission to search further beyond our borders. We are hopeful
that this permission will be forthcoming in time to allow a successful
search and appointment on 1 January 1997.

INFORMATION about the Department of Classics, University College Dublin
The Classics Department is one of the largest and most active in the
Faculty of Arts. We offer joint Honours courses in Greek, Latin, and Greek
and Roman Civilization and a single honours degree in Classical Studies.
Most students take the course in Greek and Roman Civilization which is
based on the extensive examination of texts and sources in translation.
This course embraces major topics in archaeology, history, literature and
philosophy. A single honours course in Classical Studies, which was
introduced in October 1994, offers the opportunity to begin the study of
Latin or Greek in the second year. It is also possible to begin Greek or
Latin as separate subjects in the first year.
There is a strong interest in Late Antiquity in the Department. 'The End of
the Ancient World' and 'The philosophy of Plotinus' are third year special
subjects. Neoplatonism is also offered as a subject for the MPhil degree
and a number of students have completed MLitt and MPhil degrees on these
areas.
There is a thriving and expanding postgraduate sector of over twenty-five
students. Most postgraduates act as tutors and also take part in a joint
postgraduate seminar with Trinity College.
RESEARCH FACILITIES -- There is a MacIIsi system equipped to run the TLG
and PHI data base discs within the Department itself and each staff member
is equipped with a Mac connected to a Departmental network from which it is
also possible to access local and international library catalogues and
other data bases through the college network.
The College Library has a good collection of recent periodicals and books
on classical subjects. There is also a reciprocal access agreement with the
Library of Trinity College Dublin (copyright library). The library of the
Royal Irish Academy and the National Library of Ireland also have valuable
holdings.
The Department possesses a fine Classical Museum which was established by
Professor Henry Browne during his tenure of the Greek Chair (1909-1922). It
contains a good representative collection of Greek and Roman pottery,
inscriptions, coins and miscellaneous material. It is used extensively in
the teaching programme and is visited by students of other Colleges, school
parties and visiting scholars. A development plan looks to the appointment
of a curator and a publication programme.
There are very close contacts with the Classics Departments of Trinity
College Dublin and St. Patrick's College Maynooth. Twice yearly the
Classics staff of the Dublin Colleges, Cork, Galway and the Queen's
University of Belfast meet to read papers at Maynooth.
