[1] EDITOR'S NOTE
It is with a good deal of diffidence that I assume my duties as acting
editor during Konrad's sabbatical. I would ask that you all bear with me
as I attempt to learn the ropes, and that you feel free to contact me with
any comments, criticisms, or suggestions that you might have.
You will note one small change: the different sections of the Bulletin are
now introduced by numbers in square brackets. This should allow you to
peruse the table of contents and then use the search function of your mail
program to skip to sections of particular interest.

[2] CAC ESSAY COMPETITION
I have now taken over the CAC essay competition from Jim Butrica,
who served faithfully for many years. Because the transition relatively
late in the year and in order to accommodate summer courses, I propose
a slightly later deadline for this year's competition than has been the
custom in the past. Please submit to me all student essays which you
would like considered by SEPTEMBER 15, 1996 at the address below:

[5] DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS
(a) MCMASTER UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS
From: "Wm. Slater" <SLATERW@MCMAIL.CIS.MCMASTER.CA>
Date: Tue, 9 Jul 1996 20:48:28 -0400 (EDT)
- Appointments: we are glad that Dr. Gretchen Umholtz (PhD Berkeley) has
accepted the tenurable position in Greek Archaeology. She specializes in
Hellenistic architecture and patronage.
- Dr. Sheila Dillon has left us, after a very successful year, to return
home to Chapel Hill: we shall miss her.
- Sabbaticals: Dr. E. Haley is on research leave 1996-7.
- Part time teaching: David Meadows is teaching our first summer course on
"CAD for archaeologists."
- General news: we do not expect any retirements until 2003. So far, the
administration continues to support us fully. This year we had considerable
success with internal and external awards. Endowment funds have allowed us
to maintain and even increase our library spending.
- Future plans: we are actively developing our electronic laboratory (even
doing custom work for other departments).
- Graduate study: our graduate brochure will appear in October. Applications
are welcome until January 15th 1997, and initial offers will be made around
March 1st. In the meantime email queries to classics@mcmail.mcmaster.ca
will be answered by William J. Slater.
- For a report on PhD theses completed or in progress, see the *American
Philological Association Newsletter*, vol. 19, no. 3 (June 1996), pp. 14;
