POSITIONS:
(1) UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN
Contract post under advertisement
Assistant Lecturer in Classics
The Dept of Classics at the University of Cape Town, S. Africa, is
looking to appoint a specialist in Ancient History to a one year
contract post, beginning 1 July 1996.
The vacancy arises because the current Head of Dept will be taking
over as Dean of the Faculty on 1 July and requires a teaching
assistant to take over his teaching duties. As the Deanship normally
lasts for three years, it is possible that the contract might be
renewed, but no commitment in that regard can be made, as a major
reorganisation of the faculties is under consideration and the needs
of the Dept may change.
The teaching duties of the appointee would be mainly in the field
of Greek history and historiography, and the Greek history components
may include elements of classical archaeology and social history.
Students in the Dept can major in any one or more of Latin, Greek,
Greek and Roman Literature and Thought, and Ancient History, and may
proceed to postgraduate work in the languages and Ancient History up
to doctoral level.
The salary offered will be R3 746 per month. Enquiries and
applications (with c.v. and the names and addresses of 3
contactable referees) may be sent to Assoc. Prof. J.E.Atkinson, Dept
of Classics, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch 7700, S. Africa, or
by Email to atkinson@beattie.uct.ac.za, or by fax to S.A. 021
6503726. Applications should reach the Dept by 26 January, 1996.

REMINDER--ABSTRACTS DUE FOR WOMEN'S CLASSICAL CAUCUS 1996 PANEL ON FEMINIST
PEDAGOGY!
In order for us to go ahead with the proposed 1996 panel on
feminist pedagogy, we must receive at least four abstracts by February 1.
(The announced deadline was Jan. 15, but we can extend it to Feb. 1 if not
enough abstracts are received by the 15th.) If you've been thinking about
it, please go ahead now, so you can get the abstract (of 500-800 words) to
GailAnn Rickert in time. Send four anonymous copies with a cover letter to
Prof. Rickert at Classical Studies, Box 1773, Dickinson College, Carlisle,
PA 17013. She will keep track of the proposers' identities and forward the
anonyous abstracts to the panel organizers and referees. The full
description appeared in the October APA Newsletter; the following is an
excerpt:
"How does our commitment to women's equality inform what goes on in
our classrooms? In particular, how do we deal with the issue of gender and
authority? What kinds of assignments and activities have we developed to
encourage participation by all students? ... How does the content of our
courses. . .reflect our changing perspectives on the roles of women in
classical antiquity? We invite submissions that address these and related
issues in courses of various kinds--language sequences, mythology, history
and art history, literature in translation--at any level, from introductory
to graduate." Specific examples of classroom activities and assignments
are especially welcome.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR PARTICIPATION!

THE ELECTRONIC THESAURUS LINGUAE LATINAE PROJECT
The Consortium for Latin Lexicography, based at the University of
California at Irvine, has begun to plan the development of an electronic
version of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae, or TLL. We hope to release, in
several years time, an electronic TLL on CD- ROM, complete with its own
search engine and user interface. With an electronic TLL, users will be
able to find and examine articles that meet the criteria they specify--for
example, all articles that cite a certain author or work--with a speed and
thoroughness that is impossible using the printed version.
CONSORTIUM FOR LATIN LEXICOGRAPHY
The Consortium for Latin Lexicography is composed of members from the
Classics Department at the University of California at Irvine, the editors
of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae, and the Department of Computer Science at
the University of Saskatchewan. CLL's operations are guided by an Advisory
Board made up of Classicists from several American universities and the
General Editor of TLL. Formed in 1994, the mandate of CLL is to produce an
electronic version of TLL.
The Director of CLL is Patrick Sinclair of the Department of Classics at
the University of California at Irvine. Ann DeVito, of the Department of
Computer Science at the University of Saskatchewan, is the Technical
Advisor for the electronic TLL project.
THE PRESENT STATE OF THE PROJECT
CLL is just beginning to plot the development of an electronic TLL. As an
initial step, we are formalizing the requirements of the finished product
(i.e., the features desired in the product and necessary constraints on the
system). We are also planning how we will insert into the electronic TLL
database the functional tags that will support discriminating
searches--that is, searches by author, by title, by part of speech, etc. We
will be using the TEI implementation of SGML to tag the TLL database.
At present, the electronic TLL project is funded by the Council for
Collaborative Research in the Humanities at the University of California at
Irvine. The Director is searching for long-term sources of funding.
THE ELECTRONIC TLL HOME PAGE
The Electronic TLL Home Page can be found at:
http://www.cs.usask.ca/grads/devito/e-TLL/
This web site contains information about the electronic TLL project and the
Consortium for Latin Lexicography. Papers dealing with the project are
posted to this site periodically; in the near future we plan to post a
paper delivered by Ann DeVito at the December 1995 APA meetings on the
grammar-driven approach to tagging the electronic TLL database.
