B. OUTSIDE OF CANADA
(a) POLIS AND URBS: INTERPRETING CIVIC SPACE AND IDENTITY
A graduate student symposium at Stanford University
The concept of the city is a nexus for a wide range of studies on the
ancient Mediterranean world. We are seeking papers that discuss various
facets of civic space and identity as reflected in the cultural
production of this region in antiquity. Potential topics include the
urbanity of poetry, political topography, civic religion and ritual, the
boundaries of civic membership, and utopian and dystopian
representations of communities. Studies may range from the early
classical through the late antique periods; multidisciplinary and
non-traditional approaches are encouraged.
There are two goals of this symposium: to allow graduate students to
present their research in a formal setting and to encourage
interdisciplinary analysis of the ancient Mediterranean world. Graduate
students in the classics, as well as the other humanities and social
sciences, are encouraged to submit an abstract accompanied by a CV
before October 15, 1997. We will contact prospective presenters by
November 15, 1997. Papers will be delivered in a panel format, with
twenty minutes allotted to each presentation; questions and discussion
will follow. The symposium will be held at Stanford University, February
27-28, 1998.

(b) The Department of Greek and Latin at the University of Groningen
(The Netherlands) hereby announces the fourth workshop in the series
"Workshops on Hellenistic Poetry", to be held in Groningen on 2-4
September 1998. The theme of this workshop will be Apollonius Rhodius.
The purpose of these workshops is to enable scholars working on
Hellenistic poetry to present (parts of) their research to a group of
specialists before publication. The workshops are organized once in
every two years and focus on a certain author or aspect of Hellenistic
poetry. The first three workshops focused on Callimachus (1992),
Theocritus (1994) and Genre in Hellenistic Poetry (1996). Possible
themes for subsequent workshops are: epigram; "minor" Hellenistic poets;
the impact of the Supplementum Hellenisticum on the study of Hellenistic
poetry; Hellenistic poetry and modern literary criticism; the influence
of Hellenistic poetry on later Greek poetry; Hellenistic poetry in a
Graeco-Egyptian context. Further suggestions are welcome.
Scholars who wish to contribute a paper to the workshop are requested to
send in a short notice with the title of their paper and a brief
abstract (1 page) by 15 October 1997 and, if their offer is accepted, to
send the complete text of the paper by 1 May 1998 so that it can be
distributed among the participants some time before the workshop. During
the workshop itself there will be time for a short introduction (ca. 10
minutes) followed by extensive discussion of the paper (ca. 35 minutes).
The papers will be published as "Hellenistica Groningana 4: Apollonius
Rhodius" (Egbert Forsten, Groningen). The papers should not be longer
than 20 pages.
Those who wish to take part in the discussion without contributing a
paper are requested to send a short notice before 1 April 1998 (by e-
mail or otherwise).
Possibly there will be funds to cover part of the travel expenses and a
three nights' stay at the University Guesthouse or a hotel in Groningen
for those who contribute a paper. Other participants will have to
provide their own funds and pay a fee of Dfl. 100,- to cover the costs
of tea, coffee and documentation (Dfl. 50,- for students). This fee may
be paid on arrival. We may be able to find lodging for some of the
participants in the homes of the academic staff in the Department of
Greek and Latin.
Not only senior scholars, but quite emphatically also young scholars
working on dissertations in the field of Hellenistic poetry are invited
to offer papers or to take part in the discussions in these workshops.

(d) ATHENA IN THE CLASSICAL WORLD
Lincoln College Oxford, 2nd-3rd April 1998
Athena tends to be thought of in the context of Athenian myth and cult.
However, she was also worshipped in most other Greek cities. This
conference aims to investigate Athena in this wider context, broadening
the focus of research to encompass also other Greek and non-Greek
regions. What do myths, cults and art reveal about the local character
of Athena and its relation to panhellenic perceptions? How does Athena
relate to other (Greek and non-Greek) deities? What do we know of her
origins, development and significance across the different regions of
Greece and beyond? How is her predominant war-like character brought to
terms with her role as a female deity in each area?
This conference aims to address these and other questions within an
interdisciplinary framework, enabling discussion between scholars
concerned with a wide range of sources and approaches.
Specific themes to be considered include:
* Athena in Greek cities and regions: including Arcadia,
Boiotia and Rhodes
* Athena outside Greece: including Egypt, Lycia and Spain
* Relationships with other figures: including Zeus, Aphrodite
and Herakles
* Athena in literature and art
If you would like to propose a paper of 30 minutes duration (incl. a

(e) BREAKING BOUNDARIES
11th Berkshire Conference on the History of Women
The 11th Berkshire Conference on the History of Women, "Breaking
Boundaries," will be held on June 4-6, 1999 at the University of
Rochester, Rochester, New York USA. The Program Committee welcomes
proposals that transcend regional, disciplinary, and cultural
boundaries; that break traditional boundaries of academic presentation
and explore innovative ways of presenting material and involving the
audience. The Committee also seeks proposals that discuss pedagogy,
collaborative research, and feminist activism. The Committee encourages
international participation and panels that represent a diversity of
participants.
We prefer proposals for complete panels (normally two papers, one
commentator, and a chair) or roundtables, especially those with
cross-national and comparative themes. Individual papers will also be
considered. The Program Committee may rearrange panels; submission of a
proposal will be taken as agreement with this proviso. No one may appear
more than once on the program in any capacity.
Please submit proposals IN TRIPLICATE, POSTMARKED BY JANUARY 31, 1998,
in a single packet marked "ATTN: Berkshire Conference" to the
appropriate co-chair. Each proposal must include: 1) panel title or
roundtable theme; 2) title and one-page abstract of each paper or
presentation; 3) name and address of contact person; 4) one-page vita
for each participant, including current address, telephone number, fax
number, and e-mail address; 5) a self-addressed, stamped postcard for
return upon receipt of packet.
Send proposals on U.S. and Canadian topics to NELL PAINTER, Department
of History, Princeton University, Princeton NJ 08544-1017; on European
topics to SHARON STROCCHIA, Department of History, Emory University,

(h) RETIARIUS
Announcing RETIARIUS: An electronic journal devoted to the study of
post-antique Latin language and literature from the end of the Roman
empire to the present day.
Submissions are now invited.
Each issue of RETIARIUS will be published only in electronic form on the
World Wide Web. No hard copies will be issued. Readers, of course, may
print for themselves any part of RETIARIUS which especially interests
them. RETIARIUS will be published once a year.
Latin (simple, clear, grammatically correct Latin) is the required
language for all contributions.
Each issue of RETIARIUS will be divided into two parts. The first part
will be comprised of 'creative' writing in Latin: verses, essays,
short-stories. The second part will be exclusively devoted to the
philological study of post-antique Latin texts. For this part of the
journal we will consider articles on the linguistic and/or literary
features of medieval and modern Latin texts, critical editions of
shorter Neo-Latin works, articles proposing emendations, additions, or
other improvements to already published editions of post-antique Latin
works We will also consider book reviews, but we are not in a position
to send out new copies of books to potential contributors. Instead we
ask those interested to send us the texts of their reviews, which will
be considered according to the same criteria as other submissions.
An international editorial board will evaluate all submissions to
RETIARIUS. Among the editors are experts in Latin philology, with
specialities in the late antique, medieval, humanist and modern periods.
Also among the editors are several authors of non-academic material in
Latin.
