[1] ASSOCIATION AND OTHER PROFESSIONAL NEWS

                         --------------------

From: SAUL BASTOMSKY

Subject: Closure of Classics at Monash University

Dear colleagues,

It is with the deepest regret that I inform you that the University

authorities and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Monash University in

Melbourne, Australia have decided that no further students will be admitted

to study Latin, Ancient Greek or Classical History and Culture subjects at

the University from the beginning of 1999.

The decision was made ultimately on financial grounds because of Government

cuts. A total of some 55 of the 300 staff of the Arts Faculty will have to

leave by the end of 1998, but Classics is one of only two complete areas to

be closed.

The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Marian Quartly, had tried about

four-and-a-half years ago to close the Department. Because of local and

international pressure she was forced to halt that move. Yet colleagues

were dispirited and left, not to be replaced. That had created

difficulties and allowed her now more easily to wield the axe.

I am afraid that there is nothing that can be done, but should colleagues

wish to express their disgust at this move they could write to the

Vice-Chancellor and President of the University, Prof David Robinson

(David.Robinson@adm.monash.edu.au) or to the Dean of the Arts Faculty, Prof

Marian Quartly (Marian.Quartly@arts.monash.edu.au). Please send copies to

me.

The Department was founded in 1965 by Professor H.D. Rankin, (later

incumbent of the Chair at Southampton) and enjoyed in Australia (and

abroad) an enviable reputation until the attacks on it began. Sic

transit....

Saul Bastomsky, Head of Department, Classics & Archaeology, Monash

University, Clayton, Victoria 3168, Australia.

From the (printed) APA Newsletter 21.3 (June 1998) p. 1: "The APA hopes to

have a list serve for both the placement service and for the entire

membership with email addresses. The Classical Association of Canada

already puts out an excellent electronic newsletter."

Directory "Classical Studies in Canadian Universities"

Updating was completed in May. A few changes have been made since then.

Detailed information on Departments or individuals who did not provide

updates has been removed, with only the university address left in the

directory.

May I plead again with colleagues to send notices of changes, appointments,

etc., to me on an ongoing basis, automatically, as it were, so as to keep

the directory as up-to-date as possible?

As I cannot continue to produce printed copies, members of the CAC / SCEC

(and others) interested in possessing a "hard copy" version of it have the

choice of printing it off themselves with their web browser, or persuading

the CAC / SCEC to undertake the task of producing a printed version.

From: IAN.WORTHINGTON

Subject: *EA* change of address

Dear All

This is to let you know that *Electronic Antiquity* from now on will be

published by the Department of Classics, Virginia Tech, USA. Indeed, it

will be published on the www, thereby allowing the use of Greek, graphics

etc., and thus improving its appearance greatly. Our thanks go to

Professor Terry Papillon for stepping in and saving the journal given the

total lack of interest in the journal by those in the department at

Tasmania, thereby showing how much they beguile themselves into thinking

they serve their dicipline actively.

Worthington himself is delighted to be moving to the professorship of Greek

history at the University of Missouri, and looks forward to being a member

of a team in a forward-looking and student-oriented department, and with an

enviable research reputation. His new email will be:

histiw@showme.missouri.edu

Thanks to all of you (about 800 in 26 countries subscribed, and several

hundred more who access the journal) for your support -- please inundate us

with more submissions and positions!

With best wishes, Ian Worthington

Subject: Platform Independent Perseus announcement

[TO READERS NOT INTERESTED IN THIS: THIS IS A LENGTHY DOCUMENT]

Announcing the beta 2 release of Platform Independent Perseus:

all information below may be found here:

http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/Dev/PerseusTkb2.html

*****************************

Platform Independent Perseus 2

(Perseus Tk)

The current version is beta 2

This is the second beta release of Platform

Independent Perseus 2 and the first public beta release. Perseus Tk is

based on the Tcl/Tk package by John Ousterhout from Scriptics Corporation.

It runs on MacOS and on Win32 platforms (Windows95, Windows 98, and Windows

NT).

This release is feature-complete: all of the texts, catalogs, maps,

secondary sources, and searching tools should be in place. A big advantage

of Platform Independent Perseus (aside from being cross-platform) lies in

its ability to get its data from the Internet as easily as from a hard

drive or CD-ROM. This release is therefore data-less and gets all texts,

search results, etc. from the Perseus server. Once beta testing is

complete, the data will be published on CD-ROMs by Yale University Press.

We hope you will find this release useful and

interesting.
