POSITION IN NEW ZEALAND -- VICTORIA UNIVERSITY, WELLINGTON
Below is the official advertisement for a tenure-track position in Classics
at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, arising from the
appointment of Dr Tim Parkin to Professor of Classics at Christchurch.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates from around the
world (the Department at present has staff from England, the United States,
and New Zealand).

probationary period) available from 1 July 1998 or a later date to be
negotiated.
The Classics Department (http://www.vuw.ac.nz/classics) is an area of
growth in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. We seek an appointee
with experience in at least two but preferably three of the following
areas: Greek, Latin and Classical Studies. Particular teaching
opportunities exist in the areas of Greek and Roman History (with emphasis
on Social History) and Greek and Latin Literature. Candidates with strength
in other areas, including Women in Antiquity / Gender and Sexuality, and
Ancient Religion are also encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to
candidates who already have a PhD. A strong commitment to research is
essential.

LECTURESHIP IN CLASSICS
Applications are invited from well-qualified candidates for a Lectureship
in Classics due to the appointment of the present incumbent to a Chair of
Classics at another University. The position is available from July 1998 or
a later date to be negotiated if necessary. It is permanent (subject to a
three year probationary period). It is strongly preferred that the
appointee have a completed PhD: a strong commitment to research is a
necessity.
The Classics department (http://www.vuw.ac.nz/classics) is a growing one
that teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Greek, Latin and
Classical Studies to large numbers of students. The appointee should be
able to teach in at least two of these areas (and preferably all three) to
the highest levels. Particular teaching opportunities exist in the areas of
Greek and Roman History (with an emphasis on Social History) and Greek and
Latin Literature (especially the latter). Candidates with strength in other
areas, including Women in Antiquity / Gender and Sexuality, and Ancient
Religion, are also encouraged to apply. The teaching load is usually 2-3
courses per half year (semester). Many of the larger courses are jointly
taught.
The Department is long established (it will celebrate its centenary,
together with the University, in 1999) with eight full-time positions, as
well as some part-time staff. There is an international flavour to the
staff with members having New Zealand, American and British backgrounds.
The Department has a good record in research, in publications (present
research interests include Greek Tragedy and Comedy, Hellenistic Poetry,
Roman Social History, Greek Mythology, Archaic Greek Art and Italian Art,
Architecture and Topography) and in the supervision of MA and PhD theses.
In the last few years, several of our students have been awarded highly
prestigious Fellowships/Scholarships at American and British universities.
The Department has excellent computer facilities for teaching and research.
It possesses the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae on CD-ROM, PHI disks 4 and 5,
and the Perseus Project, and the University Library contains a strong
classical collection. The Department also has a teaching collection of
Greek and Roman antiquities. The five Classics departments in New Zealand
hold regular conferences and the university offers funds for overseas
conference leave as well as Research and Study leave.

The salary scale for Lecturers is NZ$43,294 - NZ$54,381 per annum.
