DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS, UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN

We Classicists at the University of Saskatchewan are in the midst of

seeing our department decimated and our programs largely destroyed amidst

charges that we are not sufficiently active in our field. Our faculty

complement will drop from four to three (via anticipated retirement), with

members joining the Department of History or, perhaps, being dispursed

among various units. We anticipate that our joint program in Classical and

Near Eastern Archaeology will survive, along with our minor in Classics.

Otherwise, we will merely be a group of 3 individuals who happen to teach

courses related to the ancient world, with no guarantee whatsoever that we

will be replaced by classicists upon retirement.

The first consequence of all of this is the closing down of most of the

UofS Classics WWW site. In the current climate here at the UofS, only

quantifiable activities matter, and the hours put into maintaining WWW

pages, answering queries, etc. are not in that category. We in Classics

have been willing for many years now to sacrifice our research and careers

in the interest of students here in Saskatoon and elsewhere: when such

activity begins to be made the grounds for overt attack, it is time to

stop.

If you would be willing to write to any of the powers that be about your

reaction to the dissolution of the Classics department and/or the closing

of our WWW site, it would be very much appreciated, although I do not

anticipate any concrete results. I would be particularly grateful for

comments from those of you who have had students make use of our WWW-based

materials.

I will post the appropriate e-addresses below.
