                  UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA

The Department of Greek and Roman Studies invites applications for a

tenure-track position in Latin language and literature. The appointment

will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor, but is open to both entry

level and more experienced candidates. The Ph.D. is required. Applicants

should be demonstrably active in research and publication, and should be

willing to teach Latin at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, to

offer innovative courses in translation, and to supervise MA students

concentrating on Latin literature. Applications from candidates who take a

socio-cultural or interdisciplinary approach to literature will be

particularly welcome. Preference may be given to candidates with special

interests in one or more of the following areas: rhetorical and/or

philosophical prose; comedy; lyric poetry. But anyone interested in the

general description of the position is encouraged to apply.

The appointment will commence on 1 July 1999. It is one of two

appointments (the first of which was made last year) occasioned by the

retirement of the Department's two senior Latinists. The salary floor for

an Assistant Professor in 1998-99 is $45,000. Please send a letter of

application and curriculum vitae to the Chair by 22 December 1998. In

addition, three referees should be asked to send confidential letters to

the Chair by 22 December 1998.

The University of Victoria is an equity employer and encourages

applications from women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, and

aboriginal persons. In accordance with Canadian Immigration requirements,

this advertisement is directed in the first instance to Canadian Citizens

and permanent residents. Others are encouraged to apply but are not

eligible for appointment until a Canadian search is completed and no

appointment made.
