Subj:	Council of Ontario Universities Validation Process

Roberto Nickel, Fred Schroeder and I are on an Ontario provincial

committee to review the new curriculum guidelines for Latin and Greek.

There will be a meeting in Toronto on May 12 at which the guidelines will

be approved (or not) by these "Validation" committees for the C(ouncil)

of O(ntario) U(niversities) for "Classical and International Langauges."

The written and electronic responses which I have seen from colleagues

in Classics are generally supportive of the Greek and Latin proposals,

but deeply upset at the elimination of courses in Classical Studies.

I was told that classical material would be included in "World

Civilisation" courses, but (courtesy of a colleague in the History

Department) I have seen the guidlines for these courses, which fit

neither my nor his concept of what should be in such a course.

Could colleagues in Ontario please e-mail me

(hmason@chass.utoronto.ca) before the meeting with their reaction to the

non-inclusion of Classical Civilization courses? I should like to be able

to say "Faculty in every classics department in Ontario deeply

deplore...." (I'd welcome suggestions for a more suitable adverb and main

verb) "the elimination of Classical Civilisation courses from the Ontario

High School curriculum." If you've already said something to the Ministry

or to the COU, there's no harm in saying so again. *Comparanda* from

other jurisdictions ("in [name province], Classical Studies is a valued

part of the curriculum, fully supported by the Ministry of Education")

might have some weight, with COU if not with the Ontario Ministry.
