It is with regret that we inform of the passing of Professor Emerita Margaret Reesor, a longtime member of the Department of Classics at Queen's University.
MARGARET ELAINE REESOR(1924- 2010)
Professor Emerita Margaret Elaine Reesor passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2010 at Rideaucrest Home in Kingston. The daughter of Stuart and Katie Reesor of Toronto, Margaret attended Riverdale Collegiate Institute and Victoria University in the University of Toronto. After earning her PhD in Classics at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, and then teaching in the United States, she returned to Canada in 1961 to take up a teaching position in the Department of Classics at Queen’s University. She was greatly admired as a teacher in a wide range of classical subjects, including Greek language, literature, and philosophy, and the Latin writers Cicero, Lucretius, Vergil, and Seneca, and as a much-published authority on the Pre-Socratic, Stoic, and Epicurean philosophers. After retiring from Queen's in 1987 as full professor, she continued with research and writing.
Margaret is survived by her cousins Mary, Janet, Jean, Myrna, Robert, and Neil. Friends and colleagues at Queen's in Classics and in Philosophy, and her former students will remember her with deep respect and warm affection.
Funeral service and reception: 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 25, at the James Reid Funeral Home,1900 John Counter Boulevard, Kingston. Interment: Cataraqui Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be welcome for Rideaucrest Home, or the Department of Classics at Queen's University, or a charity of choice.
