PRIZE FOR THE BEST PAPER PRESENTED BY A STUDENT
AT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 2013

The Graduate Student Prize of $100.00 is awarded annually to the graduate student who delivers the best paper at the Association’s Annual Meeting. This year's prize was won by Andrew McClellan (University of British Columbia), whose paper was entitled "Vergil on the Treatment of the Dead in the Aeneid." This was a study of the ways in which the Roman poet was responding to the mutilation of the corpses of heroes as they were presented in the Iliad.

The finalists in this competition included Susan Grouchy (Western University), who examined the appearance of native Italian gods in Book VIII of Aeneid, and Jessica Romney (University of Bristol), with a paper entitled "Mediating Sophrosunê: Legitimization and Identification Practices in Sympotic Poetry."

I wish to thank the other members of the CAC Awards Committee for their work in assessing the excellent papers that were submitted and presented: Guy Chamberland, Ingrid Holmberg, Kathy Simonsen and Gaétan Thériault.

CONTRACTUALLY LIMITED TERM APPOINTMENT

The Department of Classics at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Contractually Limited Term Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor for one year, beginning August 1, 2013.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses in the undergraduate language programs in Latin, as well as Roman history and culture courses in the classical civilization program, and maintain an active research program.

A completed PhD in Classics or a related discipline is required. A record of high quality scholarly research in the area of Roman history and demonstrated excellence in teaching Classics courses at the undergraduate level are required. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The deadline for applications is July 2, 2013.

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, evidence of excellence in teaching (including a statement of teaching philosophy), and a short description of the applicant's current research plans, and a sample of academic writing.
