This scholarship is offered in memory of Desmond Conacher, formerly Professor of Classics at Trinity College, Toronto, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Honorary President of the CAC. Its purpose is to assist and encourage a young scholar entering graduate studies in classics. The scholarship is administered by the CAC through its Awards Committee. One award of $2,500 is offered each year. Deadline for applications: April 1, 2014. For details see the CAC website.

Cette bourse est offerte en mémoire de Desmond Conacher, ancien Professeur d'études classiques à Trinity College, Toronto, membre de la Société royale du Canada et Président honoraire de la Société canadienne d'études classiques. Ses objectifs sont d'encourager et de soutenir financièrement un(e) jeune étudiant(e) entreprenant(e) des études supérieures en études classiques au Canada. La Fondation est administrée par la Société canadienne d'études classiques et son Comité de sélection. Une bourse de 2500 $ est attribuée chaque année. MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND
TEACHING TERM APPOINTMENTS: FACULTY OF ARTS

Memorial University of Newfoundland anticipates making teaching term appointments in the Faculty of Arts, subject to budgetary approval and to sufficient enrolments, during the Spring and Fall semesters of 2014 and Winter semester of 2015. Departments and programs in the Faculty of Arts which may make such appointments include Archaeology, Classics, English, French & Spanish (both subject areas and the Frecker program in Saint-Pierre), Gender Studies, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious Studies and Sociology. The minimum qualification for teaching term appointments is normally a completed doctoral degree in the discipline, though in some cases a master's degree in the discipline together with appropriate teaching experience may be an acceptable qualification. For further details on these appointments, please contact the head of the appropriate department. Please forward, by March 14, 2014, a curriculum vitae, evidence of effective teaching, and the names and addresses of three referees, to Dr. Lynne Phillips, Dean of Arts, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland, A1C 5S7.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority. McGILL UNIVERSITY
CLASSICAL STUDIES FIELD TRIP TO SPAIN

In May and June the Department of History and Classical Studies, McGill University, will have a field trip to Spain. Starting in Barcelona, we will tour much of the Iberian peninsula: moving through Zaragoza (Caesaraugusta), Numancia (Numantia), Segovia, Valencia, Seville, Cartagena (Cartago Nova), Seville, Cadiz (Gadir), and Madrid. The trip costs $3200. This includes airfare, hotels, ground transport, and entrance to sites. It does not include meals.

The trip will serve as a McGill credit course: HIST 413, focussing on archaeology, topography, as well as urban and rural space. Tuition for the course is not included in the $3200 and depends on residency (please follow this link).

In order to facilitate credit transfer, we will provide syllabi and descriptions of the assignments as requested.

McGILL SUMMER INSTITUTE IN CLASSICAL STUDIES

Now in its third year, the McGill Summer Institute in Classical Studies offers students at all levels a unique opportunity to develop their understanding of the ancient world. Located within the heart of Montreal, Canada, the Institute is ideal for those students who are seeking to spend a summer studying in a culturally dynamic and bilingual city. The Institute is also suited for those considering a degree at McGill or those wishing to gain experience in a collegiate setting as preparation for university. An intensive introductory course in Latin is complemented by classes on classical mythology and ancient civilization, with an aim of fostering the understanding of ancient Mediterranean history and culture. McGill University stands at the foot of Mount Royal in downtown Montreal, and is in close proximity to Ottawa and Quebec City. As such, the Institute integrates many of the cultural offerings from these vibrant cities into its program.

Summer courses for June and July 2014:

• CLAS 203 Greek Mythology
• CLAS 206 Classics and Modern Media
• CLAS 210 Introductory Latin

Upon completion, students shall receive a formal attestation and a certificate from McGill University.

We believe that students from several different levels would be very interested in this opportunity. AP credit is negotiable for students on a per school basis. To facilitate transfer credit, we will provide copies of syllabi for institutions as requested. Housing options are available to students who require on-campus accommodations for the duration of the course(s) at McGill.

The Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) invites applications for the Homer and Dorothy Thompson Fellowship to be held at the Institute in Athens from 1 September 2014 to 31 May 2015.

The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies, and have a clear need to work in Greece.

The Fellow will spend at least nine months resident in Athens and, in addition to his or her studies, will provide ten hours of assistance weekly at the Canadian Institute in Greece in the office or library, as well as assisting at the public functions of CIG. Some previous experience in Greece and some knowledge of Modern Greek is an asset, although not a requirement.

The Fellow’s research focus may be any aspect of Hellenic studies, from ancient to mediaeval, and in any academic discipline.

In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Homer and Dorothy Thompson Fellowship.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of C$8,000 and free accommodation in the CIG hostel for the nine-month period of the fellowship (1 September to 31 May).

L’Institut canadien en Grèce (ICG) lance un appel à candidatures pour la bourse Homer et Dorothy Thompson qui sera offerte pour un séjour de neuf mois à Athènes du 1er septembre 2014 au 31 mai 2015.

Les candidats à la bourse Homer et Dorothy Thompson doivent être citoyens canadiens ou immigrants reçus, être inscrits dans un programme d’études doctorales ou postdoctorales et doivent démontrer un besoin manifeste de séjourner en Grèce pour approfondir leurs études.

Outre ses obligations en recherche, le candidat devra séjourner neuf mois à Athènes où il secondera, à raison de 10 heures par semaine, le directeur adjoint dans diverses tâches administratives et bibliothécaires en plus de participer à l’organisation des événements publics présentés à l’ICG. La connaissance du pays et de la langue sera considérée comme un atout pour les candidats, bien que facultative.

La thématique de recherche du récipiendaire doit porter sur le monde hellénique, de l'antiquité à l'époque médiévale, peu importe la discipline.

Le bénéficiaire aura l’obligation, dans toute publication ultérieure aux travaux de recherche menés sous les auspices de la bourse, de souligner le soutien de l'Institut canadien en Grèce et de la bourse Homer et Dorothy Thompson pour la complétion de ses travaux.

Le récipiendaire de la bourse se verra remettre une allocation de 8000 $ CAD et un logement gratuit à l’hôtellerie de l’ICG pour l’entière durée de la bourse (1er septembre au 31 mai).

BECAUSE CLASSICS MATTERS!

The Ontario Classical Association is currently expanding its outreach programme, Because Classics Matters! This programme seeks to promote the Classics to communities outside academia, with a particular interest in engaging secondary students in order to create a stronger connection between our schools and universities.

Many members of the CAC are already actively involved in Classics outreach. The OCA would like to hear from you, to identify the types of initiatives that have proven successful across the country, as well as those that might be developed in the future. In this way, we hope to build a centralized network to facilitate mutually beneficial activities and events between university faculty and high school teaching staff, as well as others in the community at large. Although this programme will initially focus on southern Ontario, we plan, in time, to establish similar systems across the provinces in partnership with the CAC.

Joint members of the CAC and OCA are asked to consider volunteering their time towards various outreach initiatives and to address these to the OCA. We are especially interested in individuals (and actively encourage junior or early career scholars) who would be willing to give short (30 minute), informal presentations on their research and/or general talks to promote the Classics (i.e. 'What you can do with a degree in Classics or Ancient Mediterranean Archaeology'). We also encourage collaborative efforts – colleagues working together on an excavation or translation project are especially welcome. This initiative is not designed to further enrolment for a single department or university, but rather, to advance the study of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Archaeology more generally and give students a feel for what university Classics looks like. To have your name added to a list which can then be paired with interested secondary schools in your area, please email Lucia Pinheiro Afonso (lucia.afonso@daniels.utoronto.ca). All arrangements will be made via the OCA, based on available schedules provided by all parties involved.
