A puzzling bug will stop you from proceeding to the final stage of submitting your proposal. While submitting in English the submission's metadata (step 2), an error message will appear asking you to start all over again: "Please enter the title...; Please enter an abstract...". In order to avoid this bug, please select "Français" in the list above. If you continue without choosing "Français" you will have to start again endlessly. CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS:
INSTABILITY AND PERMANENCE: UNCOVERING ANNA PERENNA

From Gwynaeth McIntyre

In the third book of the Fasti, Ovid presents an aetiological narrative focused on the festival of Anna Perenna celebrated on the Ides of March (Fast. 3.523–696). His collection of tales about Anna Perenna provide compelling evidence of her mutiplicity of identities in the Roman imagination. Indeed, her appearances in the Fasti, Aeneid, and Punica (and, to a lesser extent, the Heroides) connect Anna to the foundational legends and military history of Rome. The recently published fragments of Decimus Laberius, together with archaeological evidence, situate the figure of Anna Perenna within the context of Roman performance and spectacle. Epigraphic evidence from her sacred grove, recently discovered in Rome, indicates that Anna was an important object of cult worship and Roman religious ritual, a fact also corroborated by the literary sources. Her depiction on a coin minted by Annius Luscus emblematizes the trend of appropriating and promoting mythic and divine ancestors that was prevalent among Roman gentes of the first century BCE.

Anna’s fluctuating and unstable identity stands in contrast to her frequent association with the concept of continuity and eternity. In Roman religion and ritual, Anna assumed the role of a fertility goddess, a deity with an eternal and enduring nature tasked with ensuring the continuous prosperity of the earth. Even her name marks her as a figure of perpetuity; the name Perenna shares a pseudo-etymological connection with the Latin perennis (“everlasting, perpetual”), and Ovid connects it to the “everlasting stream” in which Anna lies hidden after her transformation into a river nymph (amne perenne latens Anna Perenna uocor, Fasti 3.654).

The complex and multifaceted figure of Anna has received surprisingly little scholarly attention, despite her presence in a wide range of sources. Yet a comprehensive study of Anna Perenna provides us with a unique opportunity to shed new light on various facets of the Roman world, from its religious practices and politics to its legendary history and poetic production. Ovid, when introducing the aetiological tale of Anna Perenna, stresses inclusivity – no tale will be concealed (fabula nulla … tegendo, Fasti 3.544). In similar fashion, the chief aim of this volume is to present groundbreaking scholarship that explores this enigmatic and important subject from all possible perspectives. Instability and Permanence: Uncovering Anna Perenna promises to be an interdisciplinary study of great interest to scholars of Roman archaeology, history, literature, mythology, and religion.

Current contributions include:
Sarah McCallum: The alternative Anna-Aeneas tradition in the Aeneid 4 and Fasti 3
Gwynaeth McIntyre: Anna Perenna and her sacred nymphs
Carole Newlands: Anna Perenna in Ovid
with a concluding chapter by T.P. Wiseman

We invite abstracts that deal with any aspect of the figure of Anna Perenna from the literary and archaeological sources.  In an effort to gather the most innovative research, we welcome contributions from all areas of study related to this enigmatic and multi-faceted figure. Possible questions to be investigated, and topics to discuss include (but are not limited to):

  • How is Anna represented in Latin literary sources (e.g. Decimus Laberius, Anna Peranna; Vergil, Aeneid 4; Ovid, Fasti 3 and Heroides; Silius Italicus, Punica 8)?
  • In what ways are competing alternative traditions about Anna Perenna acknowledged or suppressed in these literary sources?
  • What archaeological evidence remains for cult sites connected to the worship of Anna Perenna?
  • The figure of Anna Perenna in relation to Roman religion and ritual practice, and/or her role as a fertility goddess and identification with water nymphs
  • The depiction of the figure of Anna Perenna in ancient art
  • The figure of Anna Perenna in relation to ancient performance and spectacle
  • How do the various representations of Anna Perenna reflect contemporary historical and cultural realities

Our proposed timeline is as follows:

  • The deadline for abstract submission is January 15, 2016, after which we will begin reviewing the abstracts.
  • Invitations for contributions will be sent by January 30, 2016.
  • Completed chapters will be due on August 1, 2016.
  • Publication of the final edited volume is projected for Summer 2017.

Please address your abstract or questions related to submission to both Gwynaeth McIntyre (gwynaeth.mcintyre@otago.ac.nz) and Sarah McCallum (smccallum@fas.harvard.ed). Abstracts should not exceed 500 words in length and should include a bibliography (not included in word count).

The site is famous for its necropolis of rock-cut tombs imitating houses complete with carved furniture and decorations, recently listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Many of the most famous Etruscan artworks, such as the Sarcophagus of the Spouses, were found in the tombs of Caere. The team of the Queen’s University will continue the investigation a religious compound in the centre of the city, the so-called “hypogeum of Clepsina” consisting of an underground room with frescoes, sketches and inscriptions, and a network of corridors and stairways. The excavation will also investigate the urban area near the hypogeum, where a regular urbanization pattern is coming to light. Field activities will include classes on Etruscan and Roman archaeology, field methods of archaeology, field conservation, and other topics of interest. During weekends daytrips to Rome and to Etruscan and Roman sites and museums of the region will be organized.
