The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne invites applications for the Elizabeth and James Tatoulis Chair in Classics, at the rank of full Professor (Level E). This continuing appointment will be situated in the Discipline of Classics and Archaeology, one of Australia's leading programs for the study of the ancient world, a position it has maintained since the establishment of the University of Melbourne in 1854. The program provides students with a multi-disciplinary perspective on ancient Graeco-Roman, Aegean and Near Eastern cultures, from the earliest civilisations down to Late Antiquity. Teaching and research is conducted in the classical languages (Greek and Latin – the program currently also teaches Egyptian, Akkadian, and Syriac Aramaic on a sessional basis); Greek and Roman literature; Greek and Roman history; and the archaeology of the ancient Aegean, Mediterranean, Near East and Levant. Archaeological field projects are an integral part of the program with active collaborative expeditions to Georgia (the Caucasus), Turkey, Israel, Greece and Italy.

CFP: ROMAN MILITARY STUDIES PANEL
10th CELTIC CONFERENCE IN CLASSICS
MONTREAL, 19–22 JULY 2017
From Michael Fronda
A Thousand Years of War: New directions in Roman military studies, c. 500BCE-500CE
Organizers: Michael Fronda and Jeremy Armstrong
Contact: michael.fronda@mcgill.ca and js.armstrong@auckland.ac.nz (for queries only; abstracts must be sent to the panel email address, below)
Deadline for contributions: November 13, 2016
Several important developments over the last forty years have transformed the field of Roman military history. On the one hand, the dynamics of ancient warfare itself have been explored in far greater detail. Most notably, the application of Keegan’s Faces of Battle approach has opened up the soldier’s perspective of the battlefield. An ever-increasingly archaeological record has offered entirely new dialogues and avenues of inquiry. Practical and experimental studies have also done much to elucidate how ancient military praxis actually worked, in some cases confirming, in other cases challenging, the literary evidence. Logistical analyses, often drawing heavily on comparative evidence, have disclosed the constraints within which ancient armies operated. Our understanding of the practicalities of Roman warfare has therefore grown by leaps and bounds. On the other hand, the rise of the “new military history” has pushed the study of Roman warfare beyond its traditional focus on battles, equipment, tactics, and strategies, emphasizing instead the fundamental interrelation of war and a wide range of ancient social, political, economic, religious, and cultural structures. Indeed, the bibliography of scholarship on “war and society in the ancient world” appears to be expanding exponentially. Roman warfare is no longer seen as an isolated phenomenon which occurred on the fringes of empire, but as a valuable lens for understanding the basic nature of Roman society. But where is the field going? This panel aims to consider the direction of the field of Roman military studies in the next generation.
We invite papers on Roman warfare and the Roman army, broadly conceptualized with in the wider ancient Mediterranean context from c. 500 BCE to 500CE, that draw on new approaches, methodologies, and questions. This can include not only explorations of the nature of the Roman army and Roman warfare in antiquity, but also submissions which test methodological or disciplinary boundaries - for example employing psychoanalysis, neurobiology, cognitive theory, game theory, video games, or computer simulations, from the perspective of history, art history, literature, reception, memory studies, mass media studies, medicine, technology.
Abstracts (one page, 300-350 words) should be submitted to 2017CCCRomanmilitarystudies@gmail.com by November 13, 2016. Abstracts must be submitted to this address. For other queries, contact the organizers directly at the addresses provided above. Contributors will have 30 minutes to present their papers; each paper will be followed by a brief discussion. The languages of the Celtic Conference in Classics are English and French.
Please note the the Celtic Conference in Classics is self-funding and all speakers must arrange and bear their own travel and accommodation expenses.

CFP: ENCOUNTERS WITH ELITES IN THE ANCIENT WORLD – LEADERSHIP, LIFESTYLES, LEGITIMACY
Buenos Aires, Argentina, August 30–September 1, 2017
Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad de Buenos Aires
From Hans Beck
Historical scholarship on ruling elites has witnessed a quantum leap in recent years. Research in the field is also informed by public knowledge gained through current political experience that discloses how elites navigate media communication to secure support for their respective agenda.
In ancient Mediterranean history, the interplay between social status and political organization is a commonplace. But only in the course of the cultural turn have scholars begun to explore the cross-connections between this binary. In this vein of inquiry, the public performance of elites, their communication strategies, their usage of economic, cultural as well as symbolic capitals, the realms of their action, and the differentiation of their public roles have all come under the scrutiny of scholarship. To flesh out the interface between society and politics, the conference focuses on three vectors of elite distinction in ancient Greece and Rome: the communication of leadership and leadership roles; elite distinction through local and global lifestyles; and the discursive strategies of securing legitimacy.
The conference aims at the advancement of academic knowledge and its impact on society. It will also explore new opportunities for global networking. Proposals for presentations should be c. 300 words long and submitted to either Hans Beck (hans.beck@mcgill.ca) or Julián Gallego (julianalejandrogallego@hotmail.com). Submission deadline is December 1, 2016.
Organizing Committee / Comité Organizador: Hans Beck (Montreal), Julián Gallego (Buenos Aires), Carlos García Mac Gaw (Buenos Aires-La Plata), Karl-J. Hölkeskamp (Cologne), Francisco Pina Polo (Zaragoza).

AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES AT ATHENS
NEH FELLOWSHIPS
From Mary Darlington
Founded in 1881, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) is the most significant resource in Greece for American scholars in the fields of Greek language, literature, history, archaeology, philosophy, and art, from pre-Hellenic times to the present. It offers two major research libraries: the Blegen, with over 107,000 volumes dedicated to the ancient Mediterranean world; and the Gennadius, with over 126,000 volumes and archives devoted to post-classical Hellenic civilization and, more broadly, the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean. The School also sponsors excavations and provides centers for advanced research in archaeological and related topics at its excavations in the Athenian Agora and Corinth, and it houses an archaeological laboratory at the main building complex in Athens. By agreement with the Greek government, the ASCSA is authorized to serve as liaison with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism on behalf of American students and scholars for the acquisition of permits to conduct archaeological work and to study museum collections.
Since its inception in 1994, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellowship program at the ASCSA has demonstrated its effectiveness by supporting projects for 50 scholars with distinguished research and teaching careers in the humanities.
Eligibility: Postdoctoral scholars and professionals in relevant fields including architecture or art who are US citizens or foreign nationals who have lived in the US for the three years immediately preceding the application deadline. Applicants must already hold their Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree at the time of application. The ASCSA encourages younger scholars to apply.
Terms: Two to four fellowships, either five or ten months in duration. Stipend for a five-month project, $21,000; for a ten-month project, $42,000. Term must coincide with American School’s academic year, September to June. School fees are waived, and the award provides lunches at Loring Hall five days per week. The NEH Fellow will pay for travel costs, housing, partial board, residence permit, and other living expenses from the stipend. A final report is due at the end of the award period, and the ASCSA expects that copies of all publications that result from research conducted as a Fellow of the ASCSA be contributed to the relevant library of the School. The NEH Fellow is required to send one copy of all books and electronic copies of articles to the NEH.
NEH Fellows will be expected to reside primarily at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (though research may be carried out elsewhere in Greece), contribute to and enhance the scholarly dialogue, as well as contribute to and expand scholarly horizons at the School.
Application: Submit Senior Associate Membership application with fellowship online on the ASCSA web site by October 31.

PHILOMATES – A JOURNAL OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN CLASSICS
From Stephen Kershner / George Pesely / Tim Winters
Austin Peay State University is pleased to announce the launch of Philomathes – A Journal of Undergraduate Research in Classics. This on-line journal will publish original research projects carried out by undergraduate students in any area of Classics. Undergraduate research has become a prime component of university study in Classics, but there is a distinct dearth of venues in which to share this research with working scholars. Austin Peay State University hopes to help rectify this situation in some measure.
We invite submissions from current undergraduates and those who have recently completed their undergraduate education (within one year of graduation). The deadline for submissions for the first issue is November 15, 2016 with a publication date scheduled for April of 2017.
Please see the web site for information on publication policies and submission guidelines.
We look forward to receiving submissions from your students in all areas of Classical Studies. Please feel free to share this information with your colleagues at your own institution and others.
