This issue is to repair two omissions from the previous regular issue. For one thing the November issue should have included the winners of the Essay Contest organized by Liz Greene (Brock). I should also have inserted a reminder of the call for nominations for the Award of Merit. Note that the deadline is December 15th. Nous invitons les nominations au Prix du mérite, selon la procédure suivante (article 13b des règlements de la Société) :

Le Prix du mérite est accordé selon la procédure suivante. Chaque année, avant le 15 septembre, la Société fait parvenir aux membres un appel à nominations dont la date limite est fixée au 15 décembre. Chaque nomination devra être co-signée par un proposeur et un secondeur et fournira un exposé des motifs qui justifient la nomination. Peu avant ou à l’occasion de sa réunion d’automne, le conseil constitue un comité présidé par le président sortant et composé d’un membre ordinaire du conseil et de deux membres de la Société. Le comité fera part de sa (ses) recommandation(s) au conseil à l’occasion de la réunion du printemps. Un ou plusieurs Prix peuvent être octroyés chaque année. Le comité se charge de la rédaction du texte de la (des) mention(s) qui sera (seront) lue(s) à l’assemblée générale annuelle de la Société.

Toutes nominations et demandes de renseignements doivent être addressés à la présidente sortante de la Société et présidente du comité de sélection, Prof. Bonnie MacLachlan (UWO) bmacl@uwo.ca>.

La date limite est le 15 décembre 2016.

We call for nominations for the Award of Merit, in accordance with the procedure outlined below (Section 13b of the Bylaws of the Association):

The Award of Merit shall be made according to the following procedure. Each year before September 15th, the Association shall issue a call for nominations to all members, with a deadline for submissions of December 15th. Each nomination shall be signed by a nominator and a seconder, and shall include a statement of the specific reasons for the nomination. At or before its Fall meeting the Council shall strike a committee consisting of one ordinary Council member, two regular members of the Association, and the Past President as Chair. This committee shall report its recommendation(s) to the Council at its spring meeting. One or more awards may be made in any year. The Committee shall compose citation(s) to be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Association.

WINNERS OF THE CAC UNDERGRADUATE COMPETITION 2016
GAGNANTS DU CONCOURS DE DISSERTATIONS DE PREMIER CYCLE EN 2016

There were 21 submissions to the essay competition this year, a rather significant decrease from the 34 submissions for the 2015 competition and the 40 submissions for the 2014 competition. Of these, 8 were submitted to the junior category, while the remaining 13 were submitted to the senior category. In the junior category, four submissions came from women; four were from men. In the senior category seven submissions were from men; six were from women. There were two submissions in French (both submitted to the senior category), a slight decrease from the three francophone submissions from 2015; continued efforts to increase francophone participation would be welcome. Students from only 9 universities submitted essays according to the following breakdown (a sharp decrease from the 15 universities represented in 2015): U.Toronto (7); Carleton (3); Dalhousie (2); U.Alberta (2); U.Manitoba (2); U.Ottawa (2); Brock (1); McGill (1); Winnipeg (1). Additional encouragement of students in undergraduate survey courses would be beneficial – particularly from instructors of courses at the second and third-year levels.

The range of topics was large, with literary and philosophical topics generally more common than historical and archaeological ones. Instructor submissions and essays in which the student noted that his/her instructor had suggested submission tended to be of more reliably high caliber; I would encourage faculty to be proactive on this front. I have ranked the top three submissions in the junior category. In the senior category, I have included two honourable mentions; these reflect solid research essays if completed to a somewhat less rigorous philological standard than the top three.

Winners— Junior Level:

1. Cristalle Watson (Dalhousie University): “A Pestilent Knave From Macedonia”: Narratives of Culture and Ethnicity in Demosthenes’ Third Philippic.
2. Shelby Colling (University of Alberta): Pliny’s Ghost: Religious Occurrence vs. Supernatural Phenomenon.
3. Matt Jagas (Brock University): The Fall of a Democratic Empire: An Analysis of the Athenian Democracy’s Capability of Empire.

Winners — Senior Level:

1. Vanessa Snyder-Penner (University of Toronto): Naming, convention, and realism in Menander’s Dyskolos.
2. Allison Graham (Dalhousie University): Epicureanism and Cynicism in Lucian.
3. Alison Cleverley (University of Toronto): Tatian’s Rival Cosmologies as Reified Realities.
   
   Maryse Boulanger (Université d'Ottawa): La ville byzantine: l'urbanisme du IVe au VIIe siècle et la théorie du déclin (mention honorable).
   Daniel Russell (University of Winnipeg): Gothic Identity and the Methods of the Incorporation (honourable mention).

Call for applications — This scholarship is offered in memory of Desmond Conacher, formerly Professor of Classics at Trinity College, Toronto, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Honorary President of the Classical Association of Canada. Its purpose is to assist and encourage a young scholar entering graduate studies in classics. The scholarship is administered by the Classical Association of Canada. One award of $2,500 is offered each year.

Eligibility and criteria — Applicants must be Canadian students (citizens or permanent residents) intending to enter the first year of graduate studies in a classics or similar programme at a Canadian university. Specializations within the general area of classics such as ancient history, ancient philosophy, and classical archaeology are eligible. Applicants must be less than 28 years of age on January 1st of the year of application. The main criteria are academic achievement, professional promise, and an appropriate undergraduate preparation.

Appel de candidatures — Cette bourse est offerte en mémoire de Desmond Conacher, ancien professeur d’Études classiques à Trinity College, Toronto, membre de la Société royale du Canada et Président honoraire de la Société canadienne des Études classiques. Ses objectifs sont d'encourager et de soutenir financièrement un jeune étudiant débutant des études supérieures en études classiques au Canada. La Fondation est administrée par la Société canadienne des Études classiques et son comité de sélection. Une bourse de 2500 $ est attribuée chaque année.

Critères d’admissibilité — Les candidats doivent être des étudiants canadiens (citoyens ou résidents reçus) sur le point de commencer la première année d’un programme de deuxième cycle en études classiques (ou l’équivalent) dans une université canadienne. Les divers domaines de spécialisation propres aux études classiques et anciennes, tels que l’histoire ancienne, la philosophie ancienne et l’archéologie, sont admissibles. Les candidats doivent être âgés de moins de 28 ans au 1er janvier de l’année de la demande. Les principaux critères de sélection sont les réalisations académiques, les objectifs de carrière et les perspectives de succès, et le fait de posséder une formation de premier cycle pertinente.

This is the formal call for papers for the Annual Conference of the Classical Association of Canada.

The organizers of the conference welcome abstracts of a maximum of 300 words on any classical topic. The deadline for all submissions is January 15, 2017.

All abstracts should be submitted as PDF files to the conference email address: cac2017@mun.ca. For individual presenters, please include your name and the term “abstract CAC 2017” in the subject heading. In the body of the letter, include your full name, affiliation, contact information and paper title. Do not include your name in the abstract but please make sure that the title of the paper on the abstract and the title on the cover letter are the same.

The conference organizers invite proposals for panels. Panels should consist of three to four papers. The panel organizer should submit all abstracts for the panel together along with a summary of the panel at the same time.

The Women’s Network of the CAC invites abstracts on the topic of “Women and Work”. Anyone interested in submitting an abstract for the Women’s Network panel should consult the Women’s Network website (https://womensnetworkcac.wordpress.com) for further details about the panel. When submitting an abstract for this panel, presenters are requested to send the abstract both to the conference email address (cac2017@mun.ca) and to Kathryn Simonsen (kathryns@mun.ca), the Women’s Network secretary. Please indicate in the cover letter whether you would like to have your abstract considered for the regular sessions if it is not included in the Women’s Network panel.

Finally, graduate students should include a letter of support from their supervisors along with the abstract.

Payment of conference and banquet fees can be made starting early in the new year (instructions will follow). Payment will be considered as registration.

Le comité organisateur du prochain Congrès annuel de la SCÉC lance une invitation formelle aux membres à soumettre leurs propositions de communication sur tout sujet concernant l’antiquité classique. Les propositions ne doivent pas dépasser 300 mots et devront parvenir aux organisateurs au plus tard le 15 janvier 2017.

Veuillez envoyer votre proposition en format PDF à l’adresse cac2017@mun.ca. Pour une présentation individuelle, prière d’indiquer votre nom suivi de « proposition SCEC 2017 » dans l’objet du message. Dans le corps du message, indiquez votre nom complet, votre affiliation, vos coordonnées et le titre de votre communication. Nous vous prions de ne pas inscrire votre nom sur la proposition de communication. Pour éviter toute erreur d’identification, assurez-vous que le titre de votre communication soit identique à celui inscrit dans le corps du message.

Les propositions de sessions thématiques (« panels ») sont aussi les bienvenues. Elles devraient consister en trois ou quatre communications. L’organisateur d’une session thématique devrait soumettre toutes ses propositions de communication en bloc avec une brève description du thème de la session.

Le Réseau des femmes de la SCÉC accueillera avec plaisir les propositions sur le thème « Les femmes et le travail ». Les personnes intéressées sont invitées à consulter le site du Réseau à l’adresse https://womensnetworkcac.wordpress.com. Veuillez soumettre simultanément toute proposition de communication pour cette séance thématique au comité organisateur (cac2017@mun.ca) et à Kathryn Simonsen (kathryns@mun.ca), secrétaire du Réseau. Dans la lettre d’accompagnement, prière d’indiquer si vous souhaitez que votre proposition soit tout de même considérée pour une session régulière au cas où elle ne serait pas retenue pour la séance du Réseau.

Les étudiants aux cycles supérieurs doivent joindre à leur proposition une lettre de recommandation de leur directeur de recherche.

Le paiement des frais d’inscription au congrès et au banquet pourront être effectués à partir de janvier 2017 ; la procédure à suivre sera communiquée prochainement. Le paiement servira de preuve d’inscription.
