Clin Invest Med 1996; 19 (5): 302-3

Drs. Seidman and Levy are with the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Hôpital Sainte-Justine, and the Departments of Nutrition and Pediatrics, Université de Montréal, Que.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Claude Roy has been one of Canada's best-known and foremost clinicians and clinical investigators, and has touched the lives of many patients and students. He is considered one of the founding fathers of the subspecialty of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition, and received the first Shwachman Award bestowed by the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition for his work. His textbook, Pediatric Clinical Gastroenterology, has served as the bible for young students and experienced specialists in pediatric gastroenterology alike, around the globe. In June 1995, the Hôpital Sainte-Justine hosted the 1st International Symposium on Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the Convention Centre in Montreal in honour of Professor Roy, an extraordinary teacher and mentor to those in the field. Research scientists and clinicians from all over the world met to exchange ideas and to discuss issues in the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology/transplantation and nutrition. These stimulating and enjoyable exchanges covered not only many illnesses and conditions but also new avenues of research. This issue of Clinical and Investigative Medicine consists of a series of 14 articles from the invited speakers' program on the theme "From Basic Research to the Bedside." This series is published as a Festschrift in celebration and honour of Dr. Roy's illustrious career.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the speakers, authors and symposium participants who contributed to the success of this celebration. We are indebted to the generous support of the Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec and to Drs. Carl Goresky and David Rosenblatt of the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, without whose support this Festschrift publication would not have been possible. We are grateful for the support of several Canadian foundations and pharmaceutical companies, whose generous assistance to our invited speakers' program is acknowledged in the individual articles in this issue. Finally, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Léon Gosselin, Mrs. Diane Gosselin and all of the other members of Axcan Pharma. In addition to their considerable financial support, they donated their time, energy and expertise to ensure that this symposium was a resounding success.
