A gift from a patient drew Hope, BC, family physician Gerd Asche irrevocably into the local medical history of the 1858 Fraser River Gold Rush. Because of his interest in Dr. Max William Fifer, Asche undertook research missions in British Columbia, England and the US, converted his computer room to a research and writing centre, and wrote a biography of his predecessor and colleague. He recounts his experience and the growing satisfaction provided by his interest in medical history.

Un don d'un patient a attiré irrévocablement Gerd Asche, médecin de famille de Hope (C.-B.), vers l'histoire de la médecine locale au cours de la Ruée vers l'or du Fraser en 1858. Comme il s'intéressait au Dr Max William Fifer, Asche a entrepris des missions de recherche en Colombie-Britannique, en Angleterre et aux États-Unis, transformé sa salle d'ordinateur en centre de recherche et de rédaction et rédigé une biographie de son prédécesseur et collègue. Il rappelle son expérience et la satisfaction croissante que lui procure l'intérêt qu'il porte à l'histoire de la médecine.
