Abstract

Research on ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease, the two conditions grouped under the heading of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is improving our understanding of how the intestine functions at the cellular level in health and disease. Researchers in the McGill Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Program are studying the factors that affect the transport of nutrients, salt and water across cell membranes in the intestinal epithelium and investigating the cellular mechanisms of diarrhea. Their main interest is in how the intestine adapts in response to inflammation. Their findings promise to yield new targets for the pharmacologic and dietary management of IBD.

Résumé

Les recherches sur la colite ulcéreuse et la maladie de Crohn, deux affections regroupées sous l'appellation affection abdominale inflammatoire, améliorent notre compréhension du fonctionnement de l'intestin au niveau cellulaire chez les sujets en santé et les sujets malades. Les chercheurs du programme de recherche de McGill sur l'affection abdominale inflammatoire étudient des facteurs qui affectent le transport des nutriments, du sel et de l'eau à travers les membranes cellulaires de l'épithélium intestinal, ainsi que les mécanismes cellulaires de la diarrhée. Ils s'intéressent principalement à la façon dont l'intestin s'adapte à l'inflammation. Ses constatations promettent de dégager de nouvelles cibles pour le traitement pharmacologique et diététique de l'affection abdominale inflammatoire.
