NIH statement on cochlear implants

Canadian Medical Association Journal 1996; 155: 11-20

[Letters]

Earlier this year, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders and the Office of Medical Applications of Research of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) held a consensus development conference on cochlear implants in adults and children. After hearing presentations on the subject by scientific experts, a consensus panel issued a report containing conclusions and recommendations concerning the use of these implants.

NIH consensus conferences bring together researchers, practising physicians, representatives of public interest groups, consumers and others to carry out scientific assessments of drugs, devices and procedures to evaluate their safety and effectiveness.
