In-line-skating injury toll grows
Canadian Medical Association Journal 1996; 155: 311
The growing popularity of in-line skating has led to significant increases in related injuries, says the Canadian Standards Association newsletter The Consumer. Last year the Canadian Hospitals Injury Prevention Program recorded 756 in-line-skating injuries among Canada's estimated 1.5 million skaters. The Consumer urged skaters to wear protective helmets, wrist guards and elbow and knee pads, and to follow safety procedures: learn to stop with control, tuck in laces, don't wear headphones, choose smooth road surfaces and obey the rules of the roads. In May, an Ottawa man died after falling and striking his head while skating.
