Hospital managed from a distance

Canadian Medical Association Journal 1996; 155: 742
Alexandra Hospital, a 52-bed facility that provides acute and chronic care to approximately 18 000 people in Ingersoll, Ont., has handed over its management and operation to the 960-bed London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC). In what is described as a "unique strategic alliance," LHSC will appoint an on-site administrator who will be responsible for daily operations, and a senior physician who will become medical adviser to the Alexandra medical staff.

Alexandra Hospital's Board of Trust will continue as the policy-making body, but the vision and corporate goals of LHSC will guide the new alliance. A clinical-services planning committee, with participants from the two hospitals and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Western Ontario, will determine appropriate clinical services for the hospital. Board members welcomed the alliance, which will allow the Alexandra to maintain a prominent role in the community while benefiting from the expertise available in London.
