Bakos, Laszlo (Leslie) D., Abbotsford, BC; Budapest University (Hungary), 1952; diagnostic radiology; FRCPC; former consulting staff, Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford General, Chilliwack General, Langley Memorial and Mission Memorial hospitals. Died Oct. 8, 1998, aged 70.

Berger, Benjamin, Vancouver; University of Manitoba, 1945; ophthalmology; former attending staff, Vancouver General Hospital; clinical instructor, University of British Colombia. Died Feb. 21, 1999, aged 78; survived by his wife, Bea, and 3 children.

Blott, Gordon R., Nanaimo, BC; University of Alberta, 1941; FACOG; former staff and head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital; senior member, CMA. Died Aug. 24, 1998, aged 81.

Duncan, Allan C., Vancouver; University of Manitoba, 1931; general surgery; FRCS(Ed.); former visiting staff, Vancouver General Hospital; author of Medicine, Madams and Mounties (1989). Died Oct. 2, 1998, aged 89; survived by his wife, Jean, 2 sons and 1 stepson.

Grandy, John D., Chilliwack, BC; graduated summa cum laude, University of Manitoba, 1932; MCFP; former chief of staff, Chilliwack General Hospital; staff, Red Cross Hospital, Loon Lake, Sask. Died Mar. 10, 1999, aged 90; survived by his wife, Verbena and 1 daughter. In a letter to CMAJ, colleagues Archibald Young and Albert Phelps remembered Dr. Grandy this way: "He was the 'compleat' rural physician, carrying out his duties on foot, by Model T, or by horse and sled in the winter. When caught in the country, John was known to have shared a bed with a farmer's family. He was able to call on his excellent training, supplemented by his innate skill and knowledge, to improvise and to respond to the medical needs of his community."

Gray, Archie G., Brentwood Bay, BC; University of Manitoba, 1945; general surgery; FRCS(Ed). Died Feb. 16, 1999, aged 77.

Gubersky, Victor R., Carmichael, California; University of Alberta, 1959; former medical director, Syntex Ltd. Died Feb. 6, 1999, aged 63.

Lachance, Marc, Lachine (Qué.); Université Laval, 1940; chirurgie générale; ancien membre du personnel de chirurgie de l'Hôpital Général Lasalle et du Centre hospitalier de Lachine. Décédé le 16 février 1999, à l'âge de 84 ans; laisse son épouse, Denise Leclerc, et ses enfants, Dr Marc-André, Louise, Monique et Pierre.

LaSalle, Gerald, Ottawa; Laval University, 1940; DHA; former registrar, Quebec College of Medicine; consultant, Canadian Pension Committee; founder, Institute of Hospital Administration, University of Montreal, and the Quebec Hospital Association; cofounder, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Centre, University of Sherbrooke; served as consultant to hospitals and governments in Canada, the US, Europe and Africa, and was recognized as a world leader in the fields of health and hospital administration. Died Feb. 28, 1999, aged 83; survived by 9 children.

Leger, Gerard C., Moncton, NB; Laval University, 1928; family practice; DPH, MCGP; former medical director, Hotel-Dieu-de-L'Assomption hospital. Died Feb. 14, 1999, aged 97; survived by 2 daughters.

McDougall, John W., Brockville, Ont.; Queen's University, 1937; family medicine; CCFP; RCAMC, WW II; former staff, Brockville General, Brockville Psychiatric and St. Vincent de Paul hospitals; coroner, Leeds County; awarded the OMA's Glenn Sawyer Service Award in 1984. Died Feb. 14, 1999, aged 86; survived by his wife, Edna, and 1 son.

Panikkar, Mohan K., Vancouver; University of London (England), 1951; MRCS(Eng), LRCP(Lond), DTM&H (Eng), DPH. Died Aug. 1, 1997, aged 70.

Stanley, Raymond F., Duncan, BC; University of Alberta, 1951; former staff, Cowichan District Hospital. Died Oct. 17, 1998, aged 76.

Stranks, Gordon, North York, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1946; diagnostic radiology; DMR, FRCPC; former staff, York Central, Richmond Hill and York County hospitals. Died Feb. 19, 1999, aged 75; survived by his wife, Marie, and 6 children.

Tamir, Mordechay V., Vancouver; the Hebrew University (Israel), 1954; psychiatry; FRCPC; former psychiatric staff, Woodlands School, New Westminster; staff, Richmond Health Sciences Centre. Died Nov. 15, 1998, aged 71.

Webb, Eric, Victoria; University of Western Ontario, 1940; anesthesia; FRCPC; former consultant, University and St. Joseph's hospitals and the Victoria Hospital Corporation; honorary lecturer, University of Western Ontario. Died Jan. 27, 1999, aged 82; survived by 4 children.

Wensley, James A., Orillia, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1953; internal medicine; FRCPC; former staff, Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital; consulting staff, Huronia Regional Centre and Mental Health Centre, Penetanguishene, Ont. Died Feb. 3, 1999, aged 71; survived by his wife, Joan, and 2 children.
