"Life was a contest to him," son-in-law Keith Spencer told the Edmonton Journal. "He played it out right to the last minute." Spanier, Allen H., Montreal; McGill University, 1972; general surgery; FRCSC; former staff member and director of intensive care, Sir Mortimer B. DavisJewish General Hospital; associate professor, McGill University. Died Apr. 27, 1999, aged 52. Dr. Spanier died of heart failure during an inquest into a patient death. The controversial case involved his hospital's decision to remove an elderly, dying patient from the life-support system against the family's wishes. The case was considered important because it brought to the fore issues surrounding scarce medical resources. Following his death, many students recalled his teaching skills. "He cared so much about teaching and about trying to help do the right thing for his patients," recalls Dr. Caralee Caplan, a former student of Dr. Spanier's and CMAJ's 1998/99 Editorial Fellow.
