In a letter to CMAJ, his son, Dr. Malcolm McLean, commented: "Born in the horse-and-buggy era, my father watched with interest all the failures and achievements of the twentieth century. In his specialty he saw the introduction of antibiotics and was still practising during the evolution of contemporary microsurgical techniques. He was skilled in his profession and an enthusiastic amateur artist and sportsman."
