Hauptseminar: Massenmedien und ethnische Minderheiten in den USA und Kanada /
Mass Media and Ethnicity in the USA and Canada
Teilbereich I/II, April-Juli 2002, Mittwochs, 12-14 Uhr, Raum 513

The objective of the course is to inquire into aspects of media and communication with regard to the situation of ethnic minority groups in Canada and the US: aspects of representation, participation, and various strategies towards and by ethnic minorities in the media are explored. The lectures and class discussion are conducted in English and in German while the course material used is in English. Participants in the course are required to submit weekly Medialogs on the Monday of each week with the data of the previous week (i.e., Week 2 starting). The data is to be sent by e-mail to the instructor at <totosy@medienkomm.uni-halle.de> (please do not send the data in an attachment). Participants should store their data because at the end of the course all data in one document is required.

Gegenstand des Seminars sind mediale Darstellung, kulturelle Repräsentanz und kommunikative Strategien ethnischer Minderheiten in Kanada und den USA. Das Seminar findet in Deutsch, teilweise auch in Englisch statt. Die Themen der Lehrveranstaltungen werden hauptsächlich anhand von Grundmaterialien (auf  Englisch) besprochen, die zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Von den Studierenden wird aktive Teilnahme erwartet. Für einen Teilnahmeschein ist erforderlich: aktive Teilnahme im Seminar und wöchentliche Medialogs die am Montag jeder Woche (d.h. Woche 2 bis Woche 13 des Seminars) als Datei der täglichen Notizen der vorherigen Woche an den Seminarleiter im einfachen E-mail (und nicht in einem Attachment) <totosy@medienkomm.uni-halle.de> geschickt. Die SeminarteilnehmerInnen sollen die Daten eigens speichern, da am Ende des Seminars die Medialogs in einer Gesammt-Datei an den Seminarleiter geschickt werden. Für einen Leistungsschein is erforderlich: wöchentliche und am Ende des Seminars eine Gesammt-Datei von Medialogs (wie für den Teilnahmeschein) und eine Hausarbeit von ca. 25 Seiten (nach dem style sheet des Instituts). Themen für Hausarbeiten müssen mit dem Seminarleiter persönlich besprochen werden.
