The Great Canadian Trivia Contest

DECEMBER 18th's QUESTION:

Name the island located off the coast of Nova Scotia, famous for its shipwrecks, that is specifically mentioned in the Canadian Constitution.

ANSWER:

Sable Island was known as the Graveyard of the North Atlantic. The dangerous island concerned Canadians so much in the nineteenth century that when the Canadian Constitution (then called the B.N.A. Act) was written in 1867, Sable Island was mentioned in Section 91, which made it the specific responsibility of the federal government. So important was navigation to the nineteenth century that Section 91 subsection 9 specifically extends federal control over ``Beacons, Buoys, Lighthouses, and Sable Island."

LATE ANSWERS:

There was one late answer for the question that asked for the name of the only river in Canada whose waters flow into the Gulf of Mexico.

The Canadian Encyclopedia gives the answer as the Milk River. Joanne Cantalini's class at Gregory A. Hogan School in Sarnia found the names of several other waterways that flowed into the Milk such as the Battle, Frenchman, Lodge, West Fork, Poplar and Whitewater (of President Clinton fame). When I checked these out in an Atlas all of these were referred to as creeks. Only the Milk was always called a river. Could the creeks be seasonal? Maybe some participants in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan could fill us in.
