"Pin-back buttons have been around for more than a hundred years." Buttons are collectibles that appeal to children and to adults alike. Andrea Wayne-von Königslöw and Linda Granfield have taken this age-old hobby and provided opportunities for children to produce theme buttons using different techniques.

The kit comes with 4 reusable pin-back buttons 2 3/8 in. in diameter (blue, yellow green and black--more available--4 for $3.95), 4 pages of backing papers for the buttons and a 32-page guide. The instructions are easy to understand, are well organized, and are accompanied by full-colour detailed illustrations. Ideas are presented for themes of celebration, logo creation, ecology, and self-design--from "happy birthday" to "extinct is forever."

Children need opportunities to read manuals and to follow directions. The guide is balanced with how-to instructions and the factual information to encourage the art of collecting and creating. Antique buttons are photographed side by side with sketches of creative ideas. An excellent contrast of real and imaginative.

Andrea Wayne-von Königslöw has written and/or illustrated  Catching Problems1,  Peas Please! (Black Moss Press, 1989),  A Tail Between Two Cities2,  That's My Baby? (Rev. ed, Annick Press, 1990), and  Toilet Tails.

Linda Granfield has written  Extra! Extra! The Who, What, Where, When and Why of Newspapers and  Canada Votes: How We Elect Our Government.

This activity package is highly recommended for home use, gifts, parties, craft days, etc.
