Manitoba standards require individuals who provide tree and shrub care services for compensation to obtain accreditation from the Manitoba Arborists Training and Examination Program or the International Society of Arboriculture Arborist Certification Program (ISA).

Please Note: The Manitoba Arborists Training Program does not issue your Manitoba Arborists License. To acquire this license, apply to Manitoba Conservation, Licensing Section, Financial Services Branch (945-4683). Proof of either the University of Manitoba (U of M) accreditation or ISA Certification along with proof of insurability is required to make an application. The fee for this license is $20.00.

The Manitoba Arborists Training and Examination Program, which replaces the Manitoba Tree Pruner’s Program, is offered jointly by the U of M in cooperation with Assiniboine Community College (ACC). The U of M’s School of Agriculture offers the training and examinations in eastern Manitoba. ACC has been designated to offer training and examination opportunities in western Manitoba, phone: (204) 725-8700, ext. 6683.

People who have a professional or amateur interest in tree care will benefit from this program. It is recommended that participants have the ability to work at a Grade 12 literacy level to best read and comprehend the course material.

The Pesticide Applicator’s Certification and Licence is required for individuals who apply pesticides in private and public industries. This is a separate program available through Assiniboine Community College. Information regarding the Pesticide Applicators/Dispenser Certification is available on their website.

Instructor: Roy St. Lawrence, ISA Certified Arborist.

Roy St. Lawrence is the managing arborist and owner of Heartwood Arboriculture in Oakville, MB which provides arboricultural and consultation services. Roy studied forestry at Lakehead University and subsequently worked in the areas of silviculture, landscaping, plant propagation, and nursery crop production. He is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and has taught various plant and tree related courses at several post secondary institutions and to community groups.

Program Options:

A. Classroom Instruction and Exam: The course consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction and a 6-hour practical pruning, safety and climbing session. This training will prepare you to write a timed, 2.5-hour, multiple-choice (150 questions) exam.  Exam dates are scheduled for Saturdays, 9:30-12:00: November 28, 2008, February 28, 2009, April 25, 2009, and May 30, 2009. You will have the opportunity to register for the initial exam with the course. If you are unsuccessful in your initial attempt at the exam, you will have the opportunity for up to two re-writes within the next 12 months. The minimum overall passing grade is 70% and the minimum passing grade in each subject is 60%.

Cost:  $450.00 (includes G.S.T.)

B. Home Study Guide and Exam: The study guide is also available from the U of M for individuals interested in registering for a home study option. Four standard dates per year will be scheduled for the opportunity to write the exam without participating in the classroom training.  Exam dates are scheduled for Saturdays, 9:30-12:00: November 28, 2008, February 28, 2009, April 25, 2009, and May 30, 2009.

Cost:  $250 (includes G.S.T.)

C. Examination Rewrites:  Cost:   $75 (includes G.S.T.)

Enclose a cheque/money order payable to the University of Manitoba to cover the fees. The fees are payable before the short course begins. Registration deadline is no later than one week prior to the beginning of each course. All courses will be taught in the Agriculture Building at the University of Manitoba, Fort Garry Campus.
