Student Orientation at the University of Manitoba is a process of discovery where cooperative planning and a commitment to student success come together in a fun and informative program that leaves students, faculty and staff engaged and equipped to begin the year, and to achieve the best possible academic and personal out comes.

University of Manitoba Graduate Students' Association
The University of Manitoba Graduate Students' Association is pleased to announce the events for the 2008 Orientation. All events are free. All events aim to cater to multiple cultural and dietary palates. The FGS New Student Welcome will be located in Marshall McLuhan Hall (204 UC). All GSA Events will be located in the GSA Lounge (217 UC). Soccer and Ultimate will meet in the GSA Lounge and will be played nearby. Contact gsa@umgsa.ca for more information.
Friday, September 5: | 1130-1300 Pancake Brunch (Free food!) ~ A welcome brunch featuring free pancakes, juice and all the rest. 1300-1500 Campus Tours (Prizes!) ~ Following the brunch there will be campus tours for all new graduate students. Returning graduate students are also encouraged to attend. There will be prizes given away to attendees! |
Monday, September 8: |
1100-1130 GSA 101 Information Session (Prizes!) ~ An information session led by you GSA Executives. This session will provide a brief overview of the GSA and its role in graduate student life. There will be prizes given away to attendees! 1130-1200 ?Life in Manitoba? Interactive (Prizes!) ~ An interactive information session that will highlight what Manitoba has to offer. There will be prizes given away to attendees! 1200-1300 BBQ Lunch (Free food!) ~ Free BBQ! 1600-1800 Film screening of "My Winnipeg" with Popcorn provided |
Tuesday, September 9: | 1000-1200 Graduate Student Rights and Responsibilities Information Session (Prizes!) ~ Speakers from various academic areas will be providing an important information session discussing the rights and responsibilities of a graduate student. Any students curious as to what role an adviser actually has in their lives, what they are academically responsible for in order to graduate, or any other academic concerns surrounding research and education is strongly advised to attend. There will be prizes given away to attendees! 1200-1300 FGS New Student Welcome (Pizza & Prizes!) ~ Happening at Marshall McLuhan Hall (204 University Centre), the Faculty of Graduate Studies will be putting on an event for new graduate students. There will be presentations, prizes & pizza. 1600-1900 GSA Ultimate Event! (Prizes!) ~ Fun for all! Everybody welcome. Teams should have a minimum of 7 participants. Individual participants will be placed on a team. Contact pres@umgsa.ca to enter yourself or a departmental team. There will be prizes for participants! Meet in the GSA Lounge. |
Wednesday, September 10: | 1000-1200 Graduate Student Professional Information Sessions (Prizes!) ~ These sessions are designed to be short introductions to some of the professional services that are available to graduate students. Topics include the Certification in Higher Education Teaching, how to plan and write a thesis, how to maximize the library, and copyright. There will be prizes given away to attendees! 1200-1300 Super Special Surprise Lunch! (Free food!) ~ A surprise lunch with free food that is sure to delight all. 1700-2100 Trivia Bowl (Free food and Prizes!) ~ Prizes for all! A catered event with free food, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Alcohol will be available for minimum price. The trivia has been designed to challenge and include all students from the various backgrounds that make up the GSA. Thursday, September 11: | 1600-1800 GSA Soccer Tournament (Prizes!) ~ Fun for all! Everybody welcome. Teams should have a minimum of 8 participants. Individual participants will be placed on a team. There will be prizes for participants! 1800-2000 BBQ and Keg Social (Free food!) ~ Following the Soccer Tournament there will be a BBQ and Keg Social. Those not participating in the soccer tournament are encouraged to come out for the after-party! |
