Internal Medicine

Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba. The department is the largest academic program of the Faculty of Medicine and supports tertiary and quaternary care medicine for the entire Province of Manitoba Canada as well as parts of the Northwest Territories and Northern Ontario.

With over 230 full-time and part time faculty members, the department is committed to identifying and promoting the highest standards of clinic practice. Faculty members hold key positions in clinical programs within the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, provide consultation and assistance to community-based physicians and hospitals, and conduct research that ultimately leads to improved treatment and outcomes for individuals.

Research is one of the core functions of the Department of Internal Medicine. Research activities span a wide variety of topics and involve basic research, clinical research, clinical trials and studies of animal model systems. Much of the research involves collaboration of other clinical and basic science departments with the Faculty of Medicine, in the affiliate hospitals and other organizations.

The department has a rich tradition in academic medicine and a renewed commitment to the training and nurturing of physician's for the future. In addition to the Royal College accredited postgraduate training programs, faculty are involved in:

  • Undergraduate medical education
  • Undergraduate clerkship programs
  • Continuing medical education
  • Community education

The department is managed by a jointly appointed University and Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Medical Director.

The department has 15 subspecialty sections, each managed by an academic Section Head. The Section Head is responsible for the academic program and clinical care activities within each specialty.
