Psychiatry
Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba.
There are close to 100 full-time and part time faculty members in the department. Faculty members hold key positions in the Mental Health and Child & Adolescent Mental Health Programs within the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, with the majority of full-time staff being situated in the two major teaching hospitals of Health Sciences Centre and Saint Boniface General Hospital, and in Community Psychiatry postings. In these settings direct and shared patient care, as well as consultation to community-based physicians and hospitals occurs. Tertiary care clinical services are also provided for residents living outside of the Winnipeg region. The department is committed to identifying and promoting the highest standards of clinical practice.
The department has a strong tradition of delivering high quality programs throughout the continuum of medical education. We are dedicated to training our future physicians by playing an active role in the faculty’s undergraduate medical education and clerkship programs. Our residency program in psychiatry is fully-approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Our commitment to lifelong learning is continued through our continuing professional development (CME) program, which also entails educating community psychiatrists, other physicians, and allied health professionals.
Research activities are a core function of our academic department. Areas of research within the department are diverse, with established research groups in Mood & Anxiety Disorders, Neuroimaging, and Psycho-oncology/Palliative Care. Department members are involved in research spanning theoretical medicine, basic research, applied clinical research, and clinical trials. Much of the research involves partnerships with other departments in the Faculty of Medicine, as well collaboration with external partners.
