Maybe it was growing up in the late '70s and early '80s, but I am partial to stars and rainbow striping when it comes to decoration. After my husband (who obviously knows the way to my heart) bought me this quartet of spice cabinet-hued Goddess Yarns as a gift, I decided to make a lid and scarf with a modern take on that classic combination.

I don't like wind blowing through my winter hats (who does?), so I chose to use both Fair Isle patterning and a rolled brim to double the thickness throughout the hat. I can personally attest that it is both warm and wind-proof! In addition, the scarf can either be worn long and cool or doubled up twice and pulled snugly through the loop in response to changes in the weather.

The name of the hat refers to both the star pattern and the horizontal 4-color rainbow reminiscent of the upper deck of the former home of the Houston Astros.

Goddess Yarns Julia [50% merino wool/25% kid mohair/25% alpaca; 93yd/85m per 50g skein]
[MC] Color: Lady's Mantle #3961; 2 skeins
[CC1] Color: Spring Green #5185; 2 skeins
[CC2] Color: Harvest Spice #0178; 1 skein
[CC3] Color: Coleus #4345; 1 skein

Note: Yarn requirements are given for both hat and scarf.
To make only one piece, only 1 skein of each color is needed.

Hat:
1 set US #8/5mm double-pointed needles
1 16-inch US #8/5mm circular needle
1 US #10/6mm needle

Scarf:
1 US #10.5/6.5mm circular needle, 24 inches or longer

Both:
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle

GAUGE

Hat: 16 sts/24 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
Scarf: 14 sts/16 rows = 4 inches in 3x2 Rib

2x3 Rib (Worked in the round over a multiple of 5 sts):
Round 1: [K2, p3] around.
Repeat this round for 2x3 Rib.

3x2 Rib (Worked back and forth over a multiple of 5 sts + 3):
Row 1 [RS]: K3, [p2, k3] to end.
Row 2 [WS]: P3, [k2, p3] to end.
Repeat these 2 rows for 3x2 Rib.

Note: If you wish to change the size of the hat, adding or subtracting 7 sts (1 star motif) will increase or decrease the finished circumference by 1.5 inches.

Using CC1 and US 10/6mm needle, CO 90 sts. Transfer sts to US 8/5mm circular needle, place marker and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.

Work in 2x3 Rib as follows:
2 rounds using CC3
2 rounds using CC2
5 rounds using MC
2 rounds using CC2
2 rounds using CC3
1 round using CC1

Work 2 rounds in stockinette st using CC1.

Work 18 rounds in stockinette st using MC, increasing 1 st in the first round. 91 sts.

Begin working Fair Isle Chart. Chart is 7 sts wide and will be repeated 13 times in each round.

2 rows using CC2
2 rows using CC3
2 rows using CC1
BO loosely using CC1.

FINISHING

Weave in ends on scarf.
Weave in ends on RS of brim and on WS of body of hat.
Steam block both pieces lightly.
