Spirit Work

Cheesy puffs, cheese doodles or cheesy poofs, it's all cheese that goes crunch.

Misti Alpaca Chunky [100% baby alpaca; 108yds/97m per 100g skein]; color: #707 Copper Melange; 9[10, 12, 13] skeins

1 set US #10/6mm needles
1 16-inch US #9/5.5mm circular needle
Stitch holder
Tapestry needle

Seed Stitch (Worked over an odd number of sts)
Row 1: K1, [p1, k1] to end.
Every row is the same.

Cheesy Puff Stitch (Worked back and forth over a multiple of 6 sts + 1):
Rows 1, 3, 5 [WS]: K3, [p1 tbl, k5] to last 4 sts, p1 tbl, k3.
Rows 2, 4, 6 [RS]: P3, [k1 tbl, p5] to last 4 sts, k1 tbl, p3.
Rows 7, 9, 11 [WS]: [P1 tbl, k5] to last st, p1 tbl.
Rows 8, 10, 12 [RS]: [K1 tbl, p5] to last st, k1 tbl.
Repeat these 12 rows for Cheesy Puff Stitch.

Using larger needle, CO 73[79,85,91] sts.

Work 4 rows in Seed Stitch.

Work in Cheesy Puff Stitch until back measures 15[17,18,20] inches.

BO 3[3, 4, 5] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 67[73, 77, 81] sts rem.

Cont in patt as set until work measures 26[28,30,32] inches.

BO all sts.

Front
Work as for Back until work measures 22.5[24, 26, 28] inches, ending with a WS row.

Next Row [RS]: Work 27[29, 30, 32] sts in patt, place sts just worked on st holder, BO center 13[15, 17, 17] sts, work in patt to end.

Next Row [WS]: Work in patt to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
Next Row [RS]: Work in patt.
Repeat these 2 rows 4[5, 5, 5] times more. 22[23, 24, 26] sts rem.

Cont in patt until work measures 26[28,30,32] inches.

BO all sts.

Replace held sts on needle with WS facing and rejoin yarn.

Work in Cheesy Puff Stitch until work measures 2.5 inches, ending with a WS row.

Increase Row [RS]: P1, m1, work in patt to last st, m1, p1.
Work 1[1, 1, 3] row(s) in patt.
Repeat these 2[2, 2, 4] rows 6[0, 1, 15] times more. 45[39, 41, 75] sts.

Work Increase Row.
Work 3[3, 3, 5] rows in patt.
Repeat these 4[4, 4, 6] rows 12[16, 16, 1] time(s) more. 71[73, 75, 79] sts.

Cont in patt until work measures 19.75[20.75, 21.5, 22.5] inches.

BO all sts.

 
FINISHING

Sew Front to Back at shoulder seams.

Using circular needle, pick up and k 1 st in each bound off st and 1 st in each row around neckline; approx. 54[62, 66, 66] sts.

P 1 row, increasing or decreasing 1-3 sts in order to obtain a multiple of 6 sts. (If you obtained the number of sts given above, sizes M, XL, and XXL are already divisible by 6; 2 sts need to be decreased from size L for it to be divisible by 6.)

Next Round: [P5, k1 tbl] around.
Repeat this round until collar measures 1.5 inches. BO all sts loosely.

Sew sleeves into armholes. Sew sleeve and side seams.

Weave in ends and block lightly.
