This scarf began as an experiment in combining different types of reversible cables to create a deeply textured fabric.

I used a simple ribbed cable to set off braided cables whose balanced knit and purl stitches change places to produce the same pattern on both sides.

All of the cables are done on one side of the work, with purl crosses as well as the traditional knit and knit-purl ones.

The scarf is warm and dense, a guaranteed shield against wintry blasts on a misty moor or an urban street.

MATERIALS

Berroco Ultra Alpaca [50% wool, 50% alpaca; 215yd/198m per 100g skein]; color: Lavender Mix; 3 skeins

Recommended needle size:

1 set US #7/4.5mm straight needles
[always use a needle size that gives you the gauge listed below -- every knitter's gauge is unique]

20 sts/32 rows = 4 inches in stockinette st
34 sts/32 rows = 4 inches in pattern

The cables in this pattern are not difficult, but there are a lot of them. It was reversible braided cables that finally drove me to learn cabling without a cable needle. While it's by no means required, I highly recommend it. Many excellent online tutorials are available, such as Grumperina's, Wendy's, and this YouTube video.

Pfb: Purl into front, then back, of next st. 1 st increased.

C4FKP (Cable 4 front, knit and purl): Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold to front of work; p2 from left needle, k2 from cable needle.

C4BKP (Cable 4 back, knit and purl): Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold to back of work; k2 from left needle, p2 from cable needle.

C4FK (Cable 4 front, knit): Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold to front of work; k2 from left needle, k2 from cable needle.

C4BK (Cable 4 back, knit): Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold to back of work; k2 from left needle, k2 from cable needle.

C4FP (Cable 4 front, purl): Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold to front of work; p2 from left needle, p2 from cable needle.

C4BP (Cable 4 back, purl): Slip 2 sts to cable needle and hold to back of work; p2 from left needle, p2 from cable needle.

C8FKP (Cable 8 front, knit and purl): Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold to front of work; [k2, p2] from left needle, [k2, p2] from cable needle.

C8BKP (Cable 8 back, knit and purl): Slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold to back of work; [p2, k2] from left needle, [p2, k2] from cable needle.

Important Note: The cables between the third and fourth markers and between the seventh and eighth markers, are twisted every six rows. The other cables in this pattern have an eight-row pattern repeat. Only eight rows of the pattern are written out; the six-row repeat of the ribbed cables and the eight-row pattern repeat of the other cables will synch up every 24 rows. (See chart.)

Important: Even though Set-up Row and Final Rows are WS rows in relation to main chart, they are presented and should be read as RS rows, from right to left with sts worked as shown. Placing stitch markers as indicated may aid you in keeping track of the pattern for the first few repeats.

Work Set-up Row. 70 sts.
Because pattern is reversible, you will find it helpful to mark RS of work using a safety pin or waste yarn.

Work Cable Pattern until work measures 60 inches or desired length, ending with Row 7 of pattern. Be sure that the 8-st ribbed cable twists have just been worked.

Final Row: BO all sts in pattern as set in Final Row chart and directions, decreasing as indicated.

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Block lightly.
