Subject: Like a Falling Leaf

THE DHAMMAPADA

(An Anthology of Verses)

Like a falling leaf, this body is worn out with age, a nest of diseases and falling apart. The mass of corruption disintegrates, and death is the end of lifeYou are now like a withered leaf. Death's messengers themselves are in your presence. You are standing in the jaws of your departure, and provisions for the road you have none. 235

In such a case, build yourself an island. Make the effort quickly and become a wise man. Cleansed of your faults and now without blemish, you will go to the heavenly land of the saints. 236

You are now at your life's conclusion. You are in the presence of the King of Death. There is no stopping off place on the way, and provisions for the road you have none. 237

Hi g7:

I prepared this in liu of an E-card of commpassion, on the occasion of the passing of your dear friend and your rebirth to "eternal life", on day 322, your "clean and sobre" day one.

The Translator writes:

"Like a falling Leaf, this body is worn out with age, a nest of disease and falling apart. The mass of destruction disintegrates and death is the end of life."

I think this translation, although it is sufficient, is very westernized, so that it is palatable to the Jeudeo-Christan dualist bias, much like a Readers Digest version.
Originally, however when death was approaching and "in your face", the wisdom of the ancestors was to do a purification fast and by way of fasting return to a state of "heaven", a state of bliss ("Ananda") and to the fullness of being in complete contact with the universal "eternal life" force within. This is ours in the Here and NOW of the Divine Kingdom,in the present moment, forever.

There is only one reality, in conciousness and that is being in this moment. After our body departs from the tree of life, we return to the Godhead of pure Mind, like the leaf returns to the soil, or a drop of water to the Sea.
