James Crampton is one of a large
team of paleontologists at GNS Science – formerly the New Zealand
Geological Survey – in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. He completed his
undergraduate training at the University of Otago and his PhD at
Cambridge University. His research interests range from Cretaceous
inoceramid bivalve taxonomy, evolution and biostratigraphy, to timescale
development and quantitative biostratigraphy. Over the past few years
he has worked with others, including Roger Cooper, Alan Beu and Michael
Foote, on the fossil record and diversity dynamics of New Zealand
Cenozoic molluscs. In between times, he indulges in as much field work
as funding and family allow, most recently chasing down the Cenomanian/Turonian
boundary isotope excursion in New Zealand and assisting others working
on Paleogene climates. He leads the Global Change Through Time
Programme. Outside interests include hiking and, occasionally these
days, alpine climbing.
